Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 08:34 PM by sfexpat2000
and the Democrats stopped the motion.

In the process, CSPAN replayed the exchange between Murtha and Sensennbrener in question (from this a.m.).

The Thuggery clearly planned to pitch fits all day, imho.

58. You missed 2 great fights/arguments. Boner had 2 resolutions. The first one was for investigating
Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 08:34 PM by in_cog_ni_to
what happened last night during the Ag-bill vote and th e2nd one was to censure Murtha for telling Sensenbrenner his opinions were IRRELEVANT while he (Murtha) was chairing the House. Hoyer stood up on the first resolution and told Boner he would accept the resolution to investigate last night's vote because the Dems know they did NOTHING wrong. THEN, when Boner brought up the 2nd resolution Hoyer stood up and said, "Enough is enough!" "I motion to table the resolution." That was adopted and the resolution failed.:)

There was so much more! This has been going on ALL DAY LONG. One fight after another! The repukes are acting like a bunch of 2 years because they aren't getting their way.

Were you here when the voting machines went down this morning? OMG..shit hit the fan!

To say the least, it's been a very entertaining day in the House!

25. The big thing was the FISA amendment. Dems had agreed with the Director of Intelligence
and then in the 11th hour, he comes back to them for a provision that would have Gonzo spying on every American. The Dems had the majority of votes but it seems that they needed 2/3 to pass.

There has been a lot of divisiveness especially since last night, when they walked out on the Dems. It started again this morning.

You should read all the threads on this.

Welcome back!

20. Thank, God, it failed. This is a monumental mistake to expand *'s
powers to wiretap.

The House is completely out of control - Madame Squeaker needs to step down and let someone else takeover and move towards impeachment. It is way past the time that this should have been done.

I strongly suggest she clear her calendar of any future picnics, dinners, and breakfasts with *.

House rejects Democratic spy bill

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070804/ap_on_go_pr_wh/terrorism_surveillance;_ylt=AsDPOw42KhGugL7AfluOnr2s0NUE

By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago

WASHINGTON - Congress and the White House struggled Friday over expanding authority to eavesdrop on suspected foreign terrorists in a high-stakes showdown over national security.

The House rejected a Democratic proposal opposed by President Bush that would give him that authority for only four months. The largely party-line vote in favor of the bill was 218-207, short of the two-thirds majority needed under rules limiting debate.

Senate Democrats, meanwhile, prepared to concede to a bill supported by the White House limiting that authority to six months. It also would allow the director of national intelligence and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to carry out the expanded eavesdropping for four months before a court signs off on it.

The House vote left the bill's fate in doubt.

"I hope that there are no attacks before we are able to effectively update this important act," said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee.

......Broader Spying Authority Advances in Congress

By ERIC LICHTBLAU and MARK MAZZETTI
Published: August 4, 2007

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 —A furious push by the White House to broaden its wiretapping authority appeared on the verge of victory on Friday night after the Senate approved a measure that would temporarily give the administration more latitude to eavesdrop without court warrants on foreign communications that it suspects may be tied to terrorism.

The House is expected to take up the White House-backed measure on Saturday morning before going into its summer recess.

Democratic leaders acknowledged that the bill would probably pass.

Democrats in both the House and the Senate failed to pass competing measures on Friday that would have included tougher judicial checks and oversight on the eavesdropping powers.
