THE RACE: The presidential race for Democrats in Iowa

THE NUMBERS

Barack Obama, 27 percent

Hillary Rodham Clinton, 26 percent

John Edwards, 26 percent

Bill Richardson, 11 percent

___

OF INTEREST:

Clinton leads in national polls but Edwards and Obama are running stronger in Iowa, where Edwards retains a strong organization from his 2004 candidacy and Obama is prized for his freshness. Iowa Democrats rated Clinton their most electable candidate, but not as likable as her chief rivals. A survey last month for Des Moines' KCCI-TV by Research 2000 showed Edwards with a slender lead over Clinton and Obama trailing both slightly, but it is unclear whether the change is due to technical polling differences or other factors.

___

The ABC News/Washington Post telephone poll of 500 Iowa adults considered likely to participate in their state's 2008 presidential caucuses was conducted from July 26 to 31. It has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
