Bush to force Congress to stay in session to pass wiretapping bill - Dems should stay in session

And, use the time to FIGHT Bush & begin impeachment proceedings....NONE of them should be on vacation during this criticial period, anyway....They should immediately declare they are staying in session but not to pass ANY legislation, but to stop Bush's destruction

http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Bush_Congress_must_stay_at_work_0803.html

Dems better damn well not pass ANY legislation to enable Bush to do anymore illegal spying. Time to say FUCK YOU, Bush- enough is enough.

2. Pass legislation to enable Bush to do more illegal spying?
Wouldn't passing the law make the spying legal?

5. Glad to give this the 5th recommendation.
How dare Bush order Congress to do ANYTHING!

This man has violated more laws than we likely know, has shredded the Constitution and undermined the Bill of Rights.

I agree with the post above that said Congress should just cancel vacations and start IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS IMMEDIATELY. Enough truly is enough - we are way past the point of no return!

6. Bush can't force Congress to stay in session
He can ask, he can give speeches about it, he can hold his breath until his face turns blue. But he can't force Congress to do anything.

7. Stay and Work
I'd rather Congress stay of their own conscience (ha!-what a cockeyed optimist is I!). Why should they have a vacation/recess when our troops and the non-combatant Iraqi civilians are suffering and sweltering through their far more hellish summer.

Stay and work on investigation, impeachment, removal.

11. Could be shrub's counter-punch to all the hearings &
subpoenas. If he "orders" them and they refuse to follow, he just might whip out one of his executive orders and announce during an emergency all-channels-must-carry-it presser that Democrats are aiding the terra-ists by not allowing him to listen to them. Going further, if an "attack" should happen, say by coincidence, during the recess, he can vilify the Dems for it.

I would not be surprised. It is unlike this administration not to retaliate and I, for one, no longer put nothing past them.

12. A RECESS RIGHT NOW WOULD BE ABSOLUTE INSANITY!. SUICIDAL.
WE ARE ASKING FOR BIG TROUBLE if we LET these elected officials come home and allow a GONZO recess replacement--and God only know what other trouble might happen while they're on vacation.

We should go down to the office of any Democratic elected official that comes home at this critical time IN PERSON and demand they get back on the NEXT FLIGHT OUT back to D.C.

SEND THEM BACK.

17. The Senators will *not* allow any recess appointments over the break -
Reid has organized pro-forma sessions to be held during the break - often enough that Bush can't make any recess appointments.

13. I was wondering when he would use this power
it is a Constitutionally granted power of the executive to, on rare occasions, call congress into session:

ARTICLE II Section 3. He shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in case of disagreement between them, with respect to the time of adjournment, he may adjourn them to such time as he shall think proper; he shall receive ambassadors and other public ministers; he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed, and shall commission all the officers of the United States.

...

I thought he would use it adjourn congress indefinitely though...

15. Kind of ironic coming from the record setter of vacationing among Presidents

...And, the guy who took the month off before 9/11....

Stay in session, Congress, but do YOUR WORK! IMPEACH!

24. What kind of extraordinary occasion exists?
A bill to cover the administration's asses because what they are doing is illegal? Why are they dumping additional requests on the congress at this late date? Does that mean that he won't go on vacation either?

26. Do you know of any Supreme Court decisions interpreting that clause?
Edited on Sat Aug-04-07 09:41 AM by Seabiscuit
It's fairly vague as written.

I doubt any Supreme Court decision authorizes a President under that clause to order Congress not to take their annual vacation until they authorize an illegal spying program (hardly, I imagine, what the framers had in mind when writing the phrase "extraoridnary occasions".

And in the absence of such a court decision, Bush would be standing in untested waters attempting to invoke that clause as his authority. Congress could simply ignore him and go on vacation without consequence.

Beyond that, Congress has not earned any vacation this year - it should as a moral and ethical matter stay in session and impeach the bastids.

16. Also, they need to prevent Bush from getting Gonzo to
resign suddenly so that he can make a recess appointment of an AG, to avoid the confirmation process. Let them stay in session and use the time to impeach Gonzo instead.

18. CALL DC - Call your Senators, tell them to stay in DC and NOT PASS * stupid bill
* is trying to force them to pass this bad bill by creating a time-urgency similar to the one that lead to the passage of far-reaching horrendous Patriot Act.

Senate: (202) 224-3121

And the Senators will *not* allow any recess appointments over the break - Reid has organized pro-forma sessions to be held during the break - often enough that Bush can't make any recess appointments.

19. I think staying in session this August is an excellent idea! Maybe it can then prevent Bush from
doing anything crazy like starting a new war, recess appointments etc....

Our congressional reps and Senators need to start making some sacrifices for their country if they are going to keep this President in check.

No vacation when your fighting for a democracy....
