My maternal great grandparents left Georgia to settle in Texas, as did many displaced persons from that war. They had the misfortune to live in a little town right smack in the middle of General Sherman's March to the Sea. The Union army took everything they needed, leaving some families with nothing, so they left for Texas.

As a result, my grandfather was a "yellow dog" Democrat, vowing never to set foot above the Mason-Dixon line. When my uncle graduated from West Point, he relented.
