Just in time for the Romney run? "Big Love" is getting really freaky this season
In case you have not watched it, it's about polygamy and the scheming of the Utah Mormons.

All last season it pertained to the inner workings of the main family, and was very lovey-dovey

but so far this season,

we have an entry into gambling for the family..a incestuous would-be marriage to a teenaged girl... oral sex (very blatantly shown).. catty in-fighting between the wives.. scamming a dying woman out of $1.3 million... poisoning... a mormon style gang war.. and next week.. a broad daylight shooting ..

In the recent episode, an FBI agent continually called the main character "you people"..and gloated about how she would love to lock them all up..

6. She's a freak.
Hell, they're all freaks. The whole thing is just insane.

I can't believe they're going to kill Roman off either. I'll bet he lives through it. They got him in the shoulder and the stomach, he can survive it.

I feel sorriest for the son Ben, he's so brainwashed.

Bill's mother is the funniest character on there.

Great show.

3. Great show last night.
I think the writers are doing a good job on this show.

I love Marjean especially. So different from her role in Walk the Line.

They're both young and hot and horny...both torn about their religion. Four more episodes left...they'll be doin' the nasty for the season cliff hanger!

Oh, on edit: Marjean is insanely hot. Nikki is wicked hot. Barb is Milfy hot. I'd need a night off, too.

8. Let's see, if they kill Roman off...
wonder who is next in line at the compound?

Yes, Bill's morals are less than stellar this year.

It was a treat to watch last night. We had HD installed, and that is one of the channels that is digital. It is absolutely beautiful...like we were in the house with them. Really...

Wasn't Bill's dad or granddad the prophet before Roman?

And I think Tom Hanks who produces it is was raised in the culture when he was young. Would have to look it up, but I think so.

Roman killed him and took over.

I didn't know that about Tom Hanks.

43. I found this.
"Big Love" executive producer Tom Hanks was himself a Mormon for less than two years when he was a child, but he was part of the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was not a "fundamentalist Mormon" or part of polygamist culture. Hanks' frequently-disrupted family life put him in a number of different denominations while growing up. In high school, Tom Hanks joined a Fundamentalist Christian (Protestant) denomination, but did not remain active in it into his twenties. When Hanks married Rita Wilson, he joined her denomination: the Greek Orthodox Church. It is not known whether Hanks' background provided any impetus for his deciding to produce "Big Love."

21. Tom Hanks...
...came from a broken home (actually a couple of them) and largely had to fend for himself. I can't find anything saying any of the homes he was raised in was Mormon, but he is one of four executive producers on the show.

(at least based on the previews for next week) would be Roman's creepy, inbred, psycho son: Alby. Roman's creepy, but Alby's MUCH creepier.

Where he picked up the guy and went to the motel...but couldn't come to grips with his gayness? This is gonna be a very interesting plot twist.

5. I like that FBI agent from Boston, lol.
Bill tries to be such a 'normal' guy but he isn't any different than those he pretends he loathes. A horny man using religion as an excuse to dominate and control women. The show is good though; sad, funny and intense at the same time.

Mnay of those polygamous sects are incestuous, because they kick out the "boys" in their teens, and the old men keep procreating and "marrying" each other's daughters :puke:

32. Hey Klukie, we're addicted, too! LOL We started out this season
not sure if we'd keep watching, but we needed something to help get us through the ending of The Sopranos, so we tuned in... and kept on tuning in every week. It's got us totally engrossed now, and yes, last night's was the BEST episode so far. Great writing, directing, and acting all around. Top-notch, quality TV... don't think I'd watch much besides the news if it weren't for HBO.

I don't watch anything but Entourage, Big Love, TDS/Colbert and KO. I leave the MSM Cabal News on during the day sometimes as background noise, or if some big hearing is going on. The other 150 channels are a total waste of airwaves.

I hate having to pay for all this absolute CRAP that I never watch, just so I can get the tier of programming I do want to watch. It amounts to a number of channels I can count on my fingers. Mostly on one hand.

17. I also think it's getting deeper into how that life choice (their calling) is affecting Bill and
Barb's kids. They've put those kids in such a miserable circumstance, and frankly one of the most selfish part of Bill and Barb's decision to enter into polygamy.

I love the show by the way! I am Jewish from NY and I find this absolutely fascinating. The only Mormon I personally know (and in fact she left the church just prior to excommunication), I met online.

You can tell she really resents it. She only agreed to "live the principle" because she got sick and couldn't have any more kids.

39. She's leaving the principle by the end of the season.
Or will threaten to. She's obviously unhappy. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if they wrote it so that all of them leave Bill, 'cept Nikki. They've all had their major conflicts with the religion.

Then again, Marjean seems into it...hard to tell where it's heading. But it sure is getting juicy!

24. meanwhile, back in Utah...
I have progressive friends who live in Utah (yeah, I know - go figure!). They tell me that they love this show. They have viewing parties when it's on.
They say that this stuff still really exists out there - usually off the beaten path in the hills.
My friends says that you can tell when they come into town, usually by their dress. The show has major babes - it isn't usually that way in real life.

37. "it isn't usually that way in real life"

and there are actually a whole lot of rather more significant things about how it is in real life than whether the women are "babes".

http://www.ishipress.com/utah-pol.htm

Nobody needs to look to Afghanistan for their horror stories of misogyny and impoverished, abused and exploited women and children.

And if anybody produced an intensely entertaining TV drama depicting a household of women under the Taliban as soap opera, I think there might just be a slightly more nuanced reaction than Big Life is getting.

but I watched it anyway. ;)

Better any show at all about a woman with some kind of life not defined solely by her gender role than one like Big Love, which I watched half an episode of and never returned to.

Thanks for the interjection.
