Will Perjury Charges Survive Gonzo's Inevitable Resignation
Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 02:38 PM by ThomWV
Look, the guy is clearly not going to be the Attorney General much longer. So the real question is will someone follow up and put this man in jail for his lies to Congress? I'd bet he doesn't do any more time than Libby.

1. I think you are probably right
Although I am not as sure about him not surviving a bit longer; i'm sure they are saying that if they can make it to the recess they have a fighting chance.

Bush may not be able to afford cutting him loose.

2. I wouldn't bet money on that; they might have to drag him kicking and
screaming from his office. And rumor has it, the blivet was impressed with his performance yesterday.

3. He can't resign
his resigning is not part of the plan IMO.

I will be surprised if he does , I will love it
if he resigns .

I just don't think he will .

5. I don't think so, either.
He'll have to be dragged out kicking and screaming. I want footage.

6. Agreed. If they were going to through him under the bus...
I think they would have done it already.

4. Would perjury charges survive his resignation? Yes Punishment? Not sure....
The punishment question is wide open. You could have a pardon by Bush a la Libby. You could have prosecution by a special counsel appointed by the Inspector General. No one knows.

9. I don't much give a shit about punishment for AG.
There are larger fish to fry here. I think Gonzo will go down with his lips sealed & become irrelevant. Bush will probably pardon him prospectively. The truth will have to come from others. While it might be nice to see AG dangling from a rope, what we really have to be concerned with is those bigger fish. Rove, Bush, Cheney. We can get them--will HAVE to get them--without help from Gonzo.

8. Rather than
resign or be fired its more likely that * will promote him into another job, * can't have him wandering around pissed off knowing where all the bodies are.

10. I'm wouldn't bet on that

Look, the guy is clearly not going to be the Attorney General much longer.

Bush can arrange to keep him in office for some time. Even if he's indicted, we can a lot of noise about the presumption of innocence and the indictment doesn't mean he should step down. Or Bush can pardon Gonzo even before the indictment, let alone the trial (I was elected to do a job to keep the American people safe from terraists and Alberto Gonzales is an essential part of that mission).

We can't argue that it sounds too outrageous. Nothing is too outrageous for the Bush junta.

13. Wouldn't you expect scandalous numbers of resignations at Justice
At some point the shame has to become so great that he will leave on his own.

14. Yes, I would
It doesn't matter to Bush or Gonzo.

After all, there have already been a number of high-ranking resignations at DoJ.

15. Good question. I would hope they would still pursue accountability, because
impeachment is just a firing and that's not enough when laws have been broken.

What we really want is honest testimony....so I vote for special prosecutor to pursue criminal charges even after he resigns and in the meantime pursue inherent contempt to compel testimony.

The big guns need to come out for the first time in 6 years. This is serious...especially in light of the Truthout article on new vote caging emails and "voter fraud". We must get to the bottom of it...and need testimony.
