After attending the College Republican convention, Nation journalist Max Blumenthal took his camera to the Christians United for Israel's annual Washington-Israel Summit in D.C. Founded by right-wing mega-church pastor John Hagee, the group has "added the grassroots muscle of the Christian right to the already potent Israel lobby," "forging close ties with the Bush White House and members of Congress."

That evangelical support for Israel is largely based on "End Times" theology is largely irrelevant to the Israeli politicians who share the goal of expanding settlements into the West Banks and a military strike on Iran, but it is anything but irrelevant to the rank-and-file members and even one former House Majority Leader.

Blumenthal opens the video by interviewing Tom Delay, who when asked how much the "Second Coming" plays into his support for Israel, says, "obviously, it's what I live for, I hope it comes tomorrow."

Delay closed by saying, "we have to be connected to Israel to enjoy the second coming."

all those people who think "the rapture" is just around the corner don't give a rat's ass about democracy, or climate change, or Darfur, or Iraq - all they want is to keep their noses clean minute-by-minute so they won't be "left behind." They refuse to listen to anything that threatens their views, lest they be momentarily "contaminated" and left off the bus, if it arrives in the next few seconds.

That crap is a large component of The Assault on reason" IMO. Bullshit sound bites that play to what they want to hear are all they will listen to.

If a news clip says "the guy you voted for is great" they love it, say "oh goody, I'll be on the bus." If it says "he is a criminal" they say "so that means I have work to do to get back on the bus - but if I truly believe I voted correctly, then I am without sin - so I reject that argument it is satan speaking - see, jeebus, I meant well, take me, take me." That's why they are hoping for "the end of times" - they know they have screwed up royally, and hope "the rapture" comes before god realizes it too.
