I don't remember if Hagel was one of them or not. We had Collins, Snowe, Warner, Smith, Coleman, maybe Lugar. Is this a new one? Are we down to 3 now?

if he decides to run for President.

He's been against the Iraq war from early on, and he's a true red conservative.

he is out of lockstep right now with the administration and they would NEVER let him. I don't think he has a chance in hell of running. I think he will be punished for today in some way.

57. Not just the war, he's also:
Spoken against Gonzales, voted for no-confidence measure.
Co-sponsoring an amendment to close Gitmo.
Spoken against Libby commutation.
Very Dem-leaning in foreign policy.

He would be tough to run against, because he's sided with Dems on quite a few issues. Hard to get ammo on him. We'd have to go after some of his domestic votes.

24. For him to advocate a timeline is a big turnaround for him--he's said
in the recent past that he wouldn't support a binding one--said it was a "blunt instrument" that he didn't like to use. Guess he sees that nothing is going to change unless Congress forces a change.

45. He's only 60--looks older than that, though. But it's widely thought
in Nebraska that he's "toast" in '08, because of his opposition to Chimpy and the war. He has a pro-war, pro-Bush primary challenger being pushed by Karl Rove, and I think Hagel has had it with Senate politics anyway. No one here really thinks he's going to try to keep his seat.

49. Yes--there was a Salon article on that a couple months ago--his brother Tom
is a very liberal Democrat, and has publicly expressed disappointment in Chuck for being such a hard-nosed conservative and not giving a crap about the poor and underpriveleged in his political career. If you read it, it kind of makes you feel like you're guiltily eavesdropping on another family's private argument. It's a great article, though.

shrapnel in the chest and Tom helped stop the bleeding and got him to safety, and Chuck pulled Tom out of a burning personnel carrier. Pretty interesting story. Yes, I do think Tom might have some influence in keeping Chuck from being a complete Nazi like the rest of them.
