EDGEWATER -- A city councilwoman and her husband face criminal charges after allegations stemming from an effort to exorcise their daughter of "demons" by covering her with olive oil, police said.
Police forwarded complaints of misdemeanor domestic battery and felony false imprisonment to the State Attorney's Office on Thursday afternoon against Debra and Daniel Rogers. No arrests have been made.

In her police report, Investigator Heather Brady said the councilwoman told her, "It is common for the family to gather together to pray in times of tension and also to anoint the children with olive oil to cleanse their spirits.

Don Midland, pastor of Light of the World Ministries in New Smyrna Beach, said people can be anointed with many different oils, including olive oil. Midland said he has seen demons cast out many times; however, it is not like casting out demons in the movie "The Exorcist."

This week´s approval requires developers to contribute $300,000 toward the Kennedy Park capital improvement project that would include additional parking, boat trailer parking, dockage, stormwater enhancements and public amenities. The developers also are obligated to conserve about 22 acres of the roughly 30-acre property so nothing more can be built on the grounds.
Councilwoman Debra Rogers was the only one to vote against the approval.
“I feel that this is not land-use compatible compared to what we have already in the city of Edgewater,” said Rogers, who also voted against it in January.

EDGEWATER - A deal to sell off the last 83-plus acres of the city-owned industrial park for $4.5 million passed the City Council.
Prior to the 3-1 vote - Councilwoman Debra Rogers voted against the sale and Mayor Mike Thomas was absent - the council expressed its displeasure with parts of the deal, but most said the benefits outweighed keeping Parktowne Industrial Center under public ownership.

"We're doing them a favor by doing that," Rogers said of not requiring interest. "We're getting less from them than they're getting from us."
The council was also not pleased with having to pay $184,361 for construction of a road and driveway, which the city committed to previously.
Proceeds from the sale would go to installing the new road and driveway infrastructure, which totals about $1.6 million, and paying off the $3 million in debt left from the city's purchase of the property in 2001.
"We need to pull them back across the table," Rogers said of. "We're closing, and we have to bring the check."
