I scored an "8". See where you are on the Liberal vs Conservative scale
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 02:44 PM by CatWoman
http://franz.org/quiz.htm

Respondents with the most points (40) are 100 percent conservative; those with the least (0) are 100 percent liberal.

Note: this quiz was first formulated in 1994.

My, my, my -- how far we haven't come.

160. hey, I got an 8 too
I thought something was wrong with the test. I managed to get a 38 by trying to lean right, but I also answered the last 15 questions to the right and only ended up with an 18. I think the FDR vs. Reagan question is weighted pretty heavily.

278. 4 here, too, but liberal/conservative is not really a sliding scale.
Political philosophy is more 3-dimensional than 2-dimensional and some of the questions seemed falsely dichotomous to me. I wasn't too impressed by the quiz.

The choices given to some of the questions were, imo, really choose between moderately conservative to rabidly right-wing conservative as opposed to being really balanced.

75. Remember trial lawyers are viewed as pure evil by the conservative
so a conservative will pick a doctor. To be honest I trust neither but I would pick trial lawyer before a doctor. Whats funny about that question is the fact doctors believe in evolution and science, yet conservatives have a blind eye to that fact. I have yet met a doctor that had a conservative view on medical matters or believing the mud man myth that conservatives believe.

I couldn't answer several of them either. I don't think gun control or mandatory sentencing have much of any effect on the crime rate, and I am not sure how choosing the IRS over the FBI makes me liberal.

The questions/answers were really sloppy, with shit like:

"21. As a society, we should spend more money trying to find a cure for AIDS than for cancer and
heart disease because AIDS threatens younger people.
Agree
Disagree"

How to even begin answering that? Why throw age in there? And why no option for "fund both"? Just a bad, bad test.

BTW - I didn't like this question at all

21. As a society, we should spend more money trying to find a cure for AIDS than for cancer and heart disease because AIDS threatens younger people.

Personally I think both should receive equal funding because both affect both the young and the old, but since I could only 'agree' or 'disagree' I felt that the question was misleading.

BTW I disagreed - all those diseases should get full funding that they need

136. I was stumped by the AIDS question too...
...I mean, how could supporting one over the other be perceived as more or less liberal? shouldn't it have been "Would you raise taxes to fully fund medical research for AIDS?"

I also thought that HIV transmission could be somewhat controlled through testing, condoms, etc... while cancer and heart disease could strike anyone almost anytime. But, I guess I'm just trying to justify being a dirty conservative hehe.

Maybe I did something wrong. Don't liberals always worry about that? I think almost all the scores in this low range use basically the same values and rationale. certain questions were not that easy to come on because there are a lot of extenuating complex factors as opposed the the FDR/Reagan question.

76. 6 and, I'm not a "liberal".
I gave up on "liberalism" when "liberals" backed the cops in Chicago '68.

Love Me, I'm a Liberal

I cried when they shot Medgar Evers
Tears ran down my spine
I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy
As though I'd lost a father of mine
But Malcolm X got what was coming
He got what he asked for this time
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I go to civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.A.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
But don't talk about revolution
That's going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
I'm glad the commies were thrown out
of the A.F.L. C.I.O. board
I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
as long as they don't move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

The people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can't understand how their minds work
What's the matter don't they watch Les Crain?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I read New republic and Nation
I've learned to take every view
You know, I've memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I'm almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like Korea
There's no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I vote for the democratic party
They want the U.N. to be strong
I go to all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
I'll send all the money you ask for
But don't ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But I've grown older and wiser
And that's why I'm turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

125. damn, i thought for sure I'd be lower than "8"
the ones I'm apparently "conservative" on are:

1. Generally, do you tend to trust or distrust government's ability to solve problems?
I chose DISTRUST
I mean HELLO! BushCo, Congress doing nothing, etc. I trust the laws of the constitution and the process of amending it, but not the way it is being wiped on the ass of every politician in DC. (this one was actually worth 2 points)

3. What about private institutions and people? Which do you trust more?
I chose DOCTORS over Trial Lawyers
This one is a no brainer for me.... lawyers are only obligated to tell the truth in court, plus I like the education of a doctor more than a lawyer. There are bad ones in each profession, but I'd certainly rather have a doctor as a neighbor than a lawyer. (no offense to the lawyers on DU)

6. Which would do more to guarantee competitive elections?
I chose TERM LIMITS
I don't see how either of these will guarantee a sane election process. I do however see "public" funding as "corporate" funding, and even if we get a nut case as an elected official, at least with term limits they won't serve forever. I think fresh blood/new ides are good things.

8. Do you see the ideal America as an ethnic "melting pot" in which religious, cultural and ethnic distinctions are blurred, or as a nation in which ethnically diverse groups ought to coexist while retaining their cultural identity?
I chose MELTING POT
How is my choice "conservative"? In my mind it is the constant discrimination (even in our minds) that causes problems, not the merging of cultures. I mean, if we have a large percentage of people from a specific culture, I'd rather that culture merge with whatever culture we currently have than be seen as different and feared in some way without ever giving it a chance to be understood from either an historical or an everyday standpoint. I'm not saying that people of varied cultures should change their ways to become like "the rest of us", but certainly they should be able to have their children learn from other children without bias in either direction. I feel like answering the other way is like saying that mixed couples are unacceptable.

12. Even if it means cutting programs, spending must be cut to reduce the federal deficit.
I chose AGREE
I think we need to reduce the federal deficit even at the high cost of eliminating SOME programs, not all... but how is wanting to get rid of our credit card debt considered non-liberal? Maybe because this was created before Jr added trillions to it?!?

21. As a society, we should spend more money trying to find a cure for AIDS than for cancer and heart disease because AIDS threatens younger people.
I chose DISAGREE
Again I don't see how this one is anything but a choice about maybe which is more feasible, or maybe taking into account which affects more people? Sorry that I think we could and should spend money fighting cancer and heart disease, geez!

22. Talk radio shows should be regulated to ensure both sides of a debate are represented, because talk radio has an unhealthy impact on the political process.
I chose DISAGREE
For starters, I don't mind that certain stations support liberal values while others support conservative while other are simply meant to be shock jockish. I think this falls under a free speech issue anyway. If you regulate radio, then you should regulate tv, newspapers, the internet... whats next? your thoughts? I think the problem is not fairness in broadcasting but the way certain groups are buying up all the stations. Oh well, maybe I am on the con side of this one.. I can deal with that.

In between Hill and Bill. I think its my distrust of government to solve everything. Right now our government is broken and needs to be fixed before it can attempt to solve any of our problems. I was expecting this. I'm fairly liberal on many social issues and moderate on financial and government issues.

So screw you to all the freepers who think I'm some sort of ultra-liberal.

My points are likely skewed based upon the funding and censorship issues. I'm a free-speech absolutist, so I voted "no" to questions involving limiting anyone's speech -- ie, talk radio or "deceptive political commercials." I also voted "no" to giving more funding to AIDS because victims are younger (why should that matter?) and "no" to requiring federal funds for abortions. Requiring abortion funding? No way.

Before I got kicked off the freeper board, I was continually trying to point out that I'm way more moderate than many believe. I don't do knee-jerk causes just because they're viewed as liberal.

The thing kind of assumes a lot of that of 'either or' thinking. Giving you to answer questions with conventional answers.

Like why would you want to try to solve problems with conventional means that in lot cases never solved the problems anyways

250. I got a 9, but the test seems to be somewhat geared towards conservatism
I think I know which way the points went for the "who do you trust" questions, even though those questions aren't necessarily political. For example, I probably got "conservative" points for trusting doctors more than lawyers, even though I'm sure there are plenty of liberal doctors and conservative lawyers out there!

Just look at the first question:

"1. Generally, do you tend to trust or distrust government's ability to solve problems?"

Only two choices: Trust or Distrust.

That's one hellava broad topic, with many, many nuances and degrees, for such a simple answer.

GIGO rules once again.

314. 9, but 'neither' or 'both'
should have been included more - these quizzes don'w allow for much nuance. For example, I don't really trust the CIA or the peace corps. The latter has often been used as a front for pushing U.S. interests (cultural and economic imperialism). I would much prefer to see NGO's involved. The first question is way too sketchy - I trust virtually no person participating in government, which is not the same as distrust for the ideas behind the institutions (e.g. Social Security, which I trust).

315. This quiz is flawed, severely...
10. Which would curb violent crime most?

Stricter controls on the sale of guns
Mandatory sentences for those who use guns in the commission of a crime
Both

Here's question 10, with the choices below it and, to be frank, neither choice, even a combination of them, wouldn't curb violent crime at all compared to dealing with the poverty that breeds much of violent crime.

And that is just the beginning, the melting pot vs. multicultural society question baffled me.

Trying to be honest is hard on this, even lesser of two evils argument doesn't seem to hold up, another example, question 14 is a classic example.

14. U.S. interests are more seriously at stake in Haiti than they are in Korea.

Agree Disagree

Anyway you answer this you either support the Duvalier brothers, or some other dictatorship. I don't believe in U.S. interests at all, I believe in Democracy and the sovereignty of people to choose their own governments, without interference, period. I don't care if its in the United States best interests if this comes about.

Without answering these questions, I still came out as a 3, but still, the quiz is flawed or biased, I can't tell which.
