The American Academy of Pediatrics APPROVES the HPV vaccine
The thread that keeps popping up as "proof" has been thoroughly debunked.
ONE Doctor says to go slow--not the entire academy.
I have seen this bogus thread and it's bogus info inserted into every thread on this issue and would hate for people to take this lie as gospel.

4. Here's a question...
Should whacked out fundies be able to deny their children medical treatment or life saving blood transfusions simply because it goes against their own beliefs? Even though it can kill their children?

Does the state have an interest in mandating treatment for these children?

If yes, then why wouldn't the state have a mandate to protect our children against a painful and possibly deadly disease (i.e., cervical cancer)?

I don't think parents who home-school or send their children to private school are required. I fully support mandatory vaccinations for attendance to schools. We don't need diseases like polio and small pox rearing their ugly heads again.

6. Sorry but Merek is pushing too hard. Not all tests are finished
http://www.brenhambanner.com/articles/2007/02/05/news/news02.txt

says Merek is not done with all the tests. It says that

Merck is still uncertain as to whether the vaccine will lose its effect over time, which Hegar said may cause an uniformed pubic to engage in risky behavior because they think they are no longer in danger of contracting the HPV virus.

Hegar said that an even greater risk is that the Gardisil vaccine protects against only four strains of the HPV virus that can cause cervical cancer, while the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that over 100 strains of HPV can cause genital warts and that 30 sexually transmitted high risk strains can cause cancer of the cervix.

Look, the drug is available to any parent right now who wants to use it on their kids. Why isn't that good enough?

9. That is the root of the fundie argument
It will make girls more promiscuous.

And in case you aren't aware...the drug is very costly.
By making it mandatory, it ensures that it will be covered by health departments, insurance companies and Medicaid.
Anyone has the choice to opt out of the vaccine.
But what it comes down to...is that making it mandatory ensures funding for everyone while allowing opting out for anyone.

Texas Orders HPV Vaccine For All Girls

http://www.nbc5i.com/news/10916544/detail.html?subid=10101601

Perry also directed state health authorities to make the vaccine available free
to girls 9 to 18 who are uninsured or whose insurance does not cover vaccines.

In addition, he ordered that Medicaid offer Gardasil to women ages 19 to 21.

This is a huge experiment at the expense of the little girls!

17. I beg your pardon-You are 100% wrong and 100% offensive
The reason it is available is BECAUSE he mandated it.
In case you aren't familiar with the process (and obviously by your snideness you are not)
The first thing that happens is that the vaccine becomes recommended by the federal government.
It is then UP TO THE STATE to decide whether or not to mandate them.
Texas has mandated it. Now, it will be paid for by the above entities like any other mandated vaccination.
In other states, it is not covered by insurance, Medicaid OR the health department UNLESS their state makes it mandatory.

FDA Licenses New Vaccine for Prevention of Cervical Cancer

http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2006/NEW01385.html

"Gardasil was evaluated and approved in six months under FDA's priority review process"

snip-->

For most women, the body's own defense system will clear the virus and infected women
do not develop related health problems.

Gardasil does not protect against less common HPV types not included in the vaccine,
thus routine and regular pap screening remain critically important to detect precancerous
changes in the cervix to allow treatment before cervical cancer develops.

The manufacturer has agreed to conduct several studies following licensure, including
additional studies to further evaluate general safety and long-term effectiveness.

How nice of them to experiment on your /our little girls!!!!!

21. It is NOT a top ten killer at all. More baloney and hype!
The top 10 leading killers of women in the U.S. are heart disease, stroke, lung cancer (more than 70,000 deaths of women per year), respiratory diseases, Alzheimer's, breast cancer, diabetes, accidents, flu/pneumonia and colon cancer. About 3,700 U.S. women die of cervical cancer each year; that is about 1/8th of the number of women who die from colon cancer, the No. 10 killer of U.S. women.

39. Statistics
Statistics

In 2006, in the United States, it is estimated that 9,710 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and 3,700 American women will die from the disease.

Cervical cancer is caused by genital human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection (6.2 million new cases each year).

73 percent of women diagnosed with cervical cancer will survive at least five years; that number jumps to 92 percent when it is diagnosed in its early stages.

24. If you don't want it--opt out
That is totally your option and within your rights. I have no problem with it.
But by NOT making this mandatory, then you take that choice away from thousands of families who do not have the financial means to pay for this expensive vaccine, especially those families with more than one daughter in that age range.
If the vaccine was $20--like a flu shot--then it wouldn't make one bit of difference. Just about anyone can find $20 if they REALLY wanted it. But the vaccine is over $400--and this would impede many from receiving the vaccine due to the cost alone.
When you consider that the high risk groups of cervical cancer are Hispanic and Black women--then parallel that with poverty statistics, you turn this into a class issue where the rich white women can afford to pay for the shot--or not--if they so choose, but the minority women don't get a choice since they can't afford it anyway. That isn't fair.
I believe in Planned Parenthood 100%. They lobbied this vaccine extensively. I know Gov Goodhair's motives were strictly financial and related to croneyism, however, this time, I feel that the people got a coincidental victory.

>>>snip
New York, NY — Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) today urged the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to recommend widespread human papilloma virus (HPV) immunization as the path toward eradicating cervical cancer in future generations. PPFA encouraged ACIP to recommend that girls 11 to 12 years of age be vaccinated and that all young women up to age 26 should also be immunized. To ensure that the HPV vaccine will be widely accessible, PPFA asked that the HPV vaccine be included in the Vaccine for Children program. Following is the PPFA statement presented to ACIP today by Emily Stewart, PPFA Regulatory and Policy Analyst.
>>>snip
Remarks of Emily Stewart, Regulatory and Policy Analyst
Before the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)
June 29, 2006

It is an honor and a pleasure to represent Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. during this meeting where decisions will be made about who will be able to access the first vaccine to prevent cervical cancer and external genital warts. My remarks incorporate the comments of Dr. Vanessa Cullins, Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dr. Jeffery Waldman, Senior Medical Director for PPFA, both of whom regret that they are unable to attend.

As you are aware, the HPV vaccine-coupled with cervical cancer screening programs, early detection, and treatment-has enormous potential to impact public health. This potential can only be realized if those who need the vaccine are provided access to it. We recognize that enabling easy access to the HPV vaccine is no small feat, but we draw your attention to those immunization strategies that have had the greatest success — that is, those strategies that allow for herd immunity and are executed through a strategy of vaccination of all (such as smallpox), or those that are have been made a prerequisite for school admission. Access to the vaccine should be a public health priority.

Given the high cost of the HPV vaccine-at approximately $360 for the series, it is the most expensive vaccine ever-recommending routine immunization is critical to making the vaccine accessible. By doing so, you ensure coverage by private health insurers and government vaccination programs. In this vein, we strongly encourage you to include the HPV vaccine in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program. Under VFC, the HPV vaccine should be made available to all previously unvaccinated youth from 11 through 18 years of age.

36. Thanks for the link...I read that and did some Googling to see what
was out there about this. It seems that the Left and Right are waging a battle over this that comes down to "ideology" about their views of Female Reproductive Rights which is obscuring the issue that the Main Company involved in putting out this Vaccine has a Horrible Track Record of Falisfying Results of their "latest blockbuster drugs" AND being in bed with the Bushies and Wall St.!

I would not give this drug to my daughter until it's been tested further. And, btw...it's transmitted by Penises so why not Manditory Vaccinations for Little Boys?

Anyway Google search shows that this is just a "Wedge Issue" while the SAFETY of our Children gets obscured in the battle once again.

Do what you want ...but as a fellow DU'er who has experience with the major drug companies and what they are doing these days...I didn't want to let this go by without cautioning you and other DU'ers who might be thinking that giving this to your daughters is a good thing. I pray that you wont all be involved in a "Class Actions Law Suit" agains Merk and Glaxo-Smith Kline years down the road and your daughters life ruined because of the "hidden problems" in rolling out a vaccine way too soon with minimal testing in the BUSH YEARS with WALL ST. at your back...and Law Suits too...making the decisions about how fast to roll out a new product. I have to say that Planned Parenthood jumping on this makes me even wonder if they are the same orgnization that did so much good in past years. On this issue I'm kind of inbetween PP and the RR...kind of siding to the RR...which is depressing to be in because I agree with NOTHING on the RR...but this is about MANDATING SOMETHING UNTESTED FOR OUR DAUGHTERS...and until we have some more years of testing....I had to speak out to try to give more info.

Peace!

38. Excuse me,
but weren't you cheering implementing a "mandatory" vaccination program a few posts earlier? Mandatory means parents don't have a choice, absent a few limited exceptions. Find some other way to make the vaccine available to everyone, without mandating it - and requiring those of who do not want our girls experimented on to lie in order to get out of it(claiming religious exemption - when the objection has nothing to do with religion) to get out of it. If insurance companies are balking at paying for it (the only serious argument I've seen for making it mandatory) the solution is to mandate that insurance companies provide it without charge (or for a minimal charge), in the same way that most states require that insurance companies cover annual mammograms.

FWIW, the public health argument doesn't fly for this one. The argument for mandatory vaccinations centers around creating a high enough percentage of the population that is vaccinated to avoid outbreaks. The HPV vaccination program, at this point, is not even suggested for half of the population - not even close enough to the percentage high enough to prevent outbreaks.

34. And the AMA approved Hormone Replacement Therapy, too. -
I believe there's a thread around here about a woman being awarded 1.5 Million for her cancer caused by HRT. HRT was considered the cure-all and was pushed on women with little consideration of long-term effects. I am very thankful now that I refused it 13 years ago. There is no long-term experience with the HPV vaccine and two years of study is far too little to require this for children. Make it an option and available, yes, but not a requirement.
