15. I never got that burma shave thing. I think I saw it in Mad mag
all those years ago.
Is it an American thing?
Anybody!

22. yep.
Many years ago (before there were "interstates") a popular diversion while traveling the highways of the USA was reading the advertising slogans of the Burma-Shave company for their shaving cream product. One of the slogans would appear, typically two words at a time, on a series of small signs separated by 50 yards or so along the roadway.

30. The context was
that the OP posted what appeared to be a random thought in a post with little explanation of what the subject was all about ... as if all the additional burma shave signs that followed were missing. At least, that's how I took it. And it was damn funny!

28. I'll try to help -- but I don't have cable, so I have no idea what the context is in regard to this
particular debate going on.

But here's a little Burma Shave history: When I was a kid (in the 50s) the Burma Shave ads were a highlight of road trips. They weren't billboards, they were just very small signs (about the size your average homemade garage sale signs) placed in a sequential group of 5 along the highway.

There was a short verse on each sign that collectively made up a humorous little rhyme. The last sign was always "Burma Shave".

We loved those Burma Shave signs! My sisters and I would read each one out loud as we passed them in our car (usually on the way "Up North" to my Grandma's cabin). We'd triumphantly shout out "Burma Shave!" on the last one, and laugh uproariously.

Here's a few examples I just googled up:

Have Pity On
The Mighty Caesars
They Pulled their Whiskers
Out With Tweezers
Burma Shave

She Kissed The Hairbrush
By Mistake
She Thought It Was
Her Husband Jake
Burma Shave

In This World
Of Toil And Sin
Your Head Goes Bald
But Not Your Chin
Burma Shave

It Would Be More Fun
To Go By Air
But We Can't Hang
These Signs Up There
Burma Shave

Hopefully, you get the idea. Still one of my favorite memories from childhood. :D

16. Nope. There Wasn't.
At the time I was replying, the only post that said anything was "condemning the resolution".

Yeah, that says sooooooooo much detail.

When people post threads, it is generally helpful to include even the slightest friggin bit of information, ya know?

Even if in a rush to get the thread posted, one has a full hour to go back and edit with additional detail. Quite simple, really.

Furthermore, even the posts posted during my typing of my reply STILL didn't give any real context to friggin anything.

Like I said, details are helpful. (you'll notice there's another thread on this in GD, which though short as well, is far more specific. See how easy it can be?)

And yeah, I know it's easy to avoid...

I just also subscribe to the whole 'pick your battles' outlook on life. :)

26. No One Said They Did. But If You Have A Thread Open While You're Reading It, And Then Hit Reply,
whatever posts were added during the initial load and the time you finally click post were not available until afterwards. That is why you can easily see a few minutes of gap between your post and the last post you had read prior.

As I said, if ya use your head it's quite simple to understand.

On a serious note though, it is a pet peeve of mine when thread posters omit the important details. Not really a big deal, so I am kinda lighthearted as I post in this thread, I did want to ask that in the future if you wanted to post quickly, that sometime afterwards you just quickly edit and add a few additional details such as "Seriously, this fucker condemning the non binding Iraq resolution on CSPAN 2. What an ass!" would've been sufficient. I know you might not care if it's a pet peeve of mine or not, cause lord knows if I were you I wouldn't care what I thought either, but it is something that pesters other DU'ers as well because you click on the thread and know there's something being spoken about that we'd possibly be interested in knowing, yet can't find the details to become aware. Fair enough?
