If the Democrats want our cooperation, they'll give the president's nominees an up-or-down vote
November 17, 2006

Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who will become minority leader Jan. 4, told the conservative Federalist Society not to feel bad about the Senate election results because Republicans will hold 49 seats in a body that requires 60 votes to end a filibuster and bring legislation or presidential nominees to a final vote.

"If the “Democrats want our cooperation, they'll give the president's judicial nominees an up-or-down vote,” McConnell said.

there's the right of ANY Senator to demand 60 votes for passage, and the numbers the republican leader promised he had available to 'filibuster' and block debate.

4. The Dems had this power
all along and did nothing with it. Nothing.

THe Democrats need to be able to get down and dirty just the like the Repugs.

What happened to those 12 GOP senators who were opposed to the surge? Did Cheney do some weird mind meld on them?

GOP Leader Threatens Filibuster On Iraq
Sen. Mitch McConnell Warns He May Block Legislation Expressing Disapproval Of Bush's Plan

<snip>

(AP) President Bush's decision to deploy 21,500 additional troops to Iraq drew fierce opposition Thursday from congressional Democrats, but the Senate's top Republican threatened a filibuster to block any legislation expressing disapproval of the plan.

"Obviously, it will ... require 60 votes," said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., as senior administration officials made the case for Mr. Bush's new policy in Congress, at news briefings and the morning television programs.

<snip>

At a news conference, McConnell accused Democrats of secretly favoring a plan to cut off funding for the troops — an allegation that Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. denied.
