Poll question: Which kind of "Democrat" annoys you most (poll)
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 01:24 PM by dmallind
Because we are a very diverse party there is much range of opinion. I have read several threads where it seems the very left of the party feels they are ridiculed and ganged up on here. As a member much closer to the right of the party I've felt the same way. So obviously not scientific or valid but worth a try to get a snapshot of the zeitgeist I thought: WHICH KIND OF DEM DO YOU LIKE LEAST ON DU?

11. Actually that's why I am trying this
If both edges at the very least feel that they are often the target of unfair criticism, my guess is that they are both less likely to see that they are not alone. It's my hope that the poll will indicate that ALL constituencies within the party raise the ire of others on here, and that this demonstrates that there is no conspiracy against either the very right of the party or the very left. If instead they carry on thinking that they and only they are being targeted, that will cause far more harm to unity and cooperation.

17. That's an interesting notion that I honestly hadn't considered...
and, certainly, I can't blame you for posting anything divisive, then. In fact, more power to you!

That said, though, if this doesn't degenerate into a flame fest at some point, I'll eat my shorts. :P

I.e., your Zells or Joementums.

So long as a conservative, right-leaning Dem can discuss issues honestly, I'm fine with them mixing it up with the folks who are well to the left of them (and me, for that matter.)

Thought about making it an option but then I was worried it would be an easy copout answer for default.

even to the exclusion of reason and self interest.

So wouldn't the rational thing be to take what works from the far right's playbook- and couple it with popular policy positions?

Nah....

43. Irrational?
I'd actually use that same word to describe those who continue to blame Nader nearly 7 years after the selection of Bush.

I can't believe people are still so afraid of a 3rd Party. Our party is truly pathetic if we can't manage to win in 2008 by a large margin. Even if Nader got the 3 % he got in 2000, the Democrats still should be able to win, considering the Republican Party is so unpopular today.

I plan to vote for our nominee regardless, since I live in a swing-state (FL). But I don't think it's fair to express such hostility to those who actually take the time to vote (unlike most of the public), even if it's not for the Democrat.

15. single issue dems
They have one issue and they discard everything else as unimportant.

The DCLers I don't really have an opinion, don't know much about that organization.

I'm a party loyalist and proud of it, but that doesn't mean there aren't exceptions such as Lieberman and Miller.

16. Where is the choice for "my head is exploding"?
It really depends on the issue and the day.

Mostly the single-issue ones, often the DLC ones, sometimes the blue-dogs, and even occasionally the ultra-progressives.

Any of them on their worst day is better than the best repug, though...

Sounds like a play on "ultra liberal," a term that gets thrown around about 10-15 times per page in Republican fund raising mailers....

27. The opposite of a "corporatist DLC empty suit" ;)
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 02:34 PM by dmallind
Since polls do not give you the space to write essays I am using that as shorthand for one who takes positions to the left of the Democratic mainstream. This would be contrasted to the simple "progressive" since at least in today's political spectrum, almost all Democrats are more progressive than the status quo. I think the best definition I can come up with is that bloc of the party which either genuinely can NOT see much or any difference, overall, between Hillary and Bush or believe that it helps the cause of the Democratic party to claim that there is none.

28. Gotta quibble a bit with that....
Most Democrats are considerably TO THE RIGHT of the "mainstream" as illustrated time and again in poll after poll.

See, e.g.:The Progressive Majority: Why a Conservative America is a Myth

http://home.ourfuture.org/reports/20070612_theprogressivemajority/

Seems to me that progressives- as opposed to corporatists/DLCers, are basically those who still for the most part, represent traditional Democratic values. I rough guess would be (based on a couple of recent votes) that'd be about 2/5ths of the party.

Incidentally, if the polls are to be believed- it's also the "pragmatic wing" of the party- in as much as the agenda fits with what a substantial majority would like to see in terms of policies.

"Ultra-Progressives" are a pretty rare breed- think Wellstone & Defazio or Bernie Sanders.

This thread's been up for hours. I figured it would be close to 150 replies with multiple "deleted sub-threads".

I'd say the DLC'rs annoy me the most. I tend to find myself in agreement with the further left contingent of DU. I admire the passion of posters who you deem "ultra progressives". It seems that they have a lot of conviction in their beliefs, even if I disagree with their actions (such as supporting 3rd Party candidates)
