Beware of Greeks Bearing Gifts
Totally, totally out of character. I wonder what's going on?? George W Bush does not "make nice" with the Democrats unless he has a reason. He cannot be trusted . He is a deceitful person...But, I guess I did not have to tell you that?
=====================================

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070203/ap_on_go_pr_wh/house_democrats

<snip>
He said disagreeing with him over the war — as many in the room do — does not mean "you don't share the same sense of patriotism I do."

"You can get that thought out of your mind, if that's what some believe," the president said. "These are tough times, but there's no doubt in my mind that you want to secure this homeland as much as I do."

<snip>
Bush's conciliatory words were similar to some of his previous statements. But the applause and acknowledgment that followed them offered some indication that this audience was happy to hear them so directly and in person.

"We were honored by your presence. We're also encouraged by your remarks," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) of California said after Democrats met privately with the president. "I believe we have an opportunity to work together."

Bush said, "We don't always agree. That's why we're in different parties. But we do agree about our country. We do agree about the desire to work together and I really appreciate you letting me come by. I felt welcomed."

2. The appearance of conciliation is just that.
Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 11:35 PM by smoogatz
The appearance. So far Bush has offered nothing of substance that demonstrates that he's going to do anything other than what he's always done--play hardball rightwing politics with wedge issues and personal attacks on all who oppose him, while trying to ram his theo-fascist agenda through congress.

6. It's a PR stunt...
was my first impression. He wants the public to think he is being conciliatory as he signs another signing statement, as he orders another ship to the Persian Gulf, as he tortures another person in our names, and so forth and so forth. We have seen far too much of Mr Bush's game already. We need not see more.

7. No increases in defense spending, NONE
Don't even pass a defense budget, continuing budget authority and that's it. No discussion of cuts in social programs, no veto threats. You're going down, scumbag. Oh, and by the way, impeachment is not off the table.

8. Speaking of Greeks, this entire state of current affairs is
reminiscent of Pericles and the Peloponnesian war. Pericles was responsible for the war, and ultimately for the fall of one of the greatest civilizations that has ever existed. Pericles lied all the time. His 'democracy' was in words only. The resemblance between him and this modern day tyrant B* never ceases to amaze me. B* is a liar and his gifts are tainted with blood.

13. More anti-Hellenism?
You know, Pericles was in the end the slickest of the demagogues, but this comparison bites. In personal terms there is no comparison. Pericles was known as the greatest orator of his time. And he put through a fantastic building program, as in the Parthenon!

I can have a fit!

Would you say shifty as a black man, or cheap as a Jew, or Indian giver? If not, lay off the Greeks, okay? Cut us, do we not bleed?
