Truckers or anybody who might have occasion to use a public or other big weigh scale
Wondering what the charges are? Percentage of load or simple fee for use? I ask because a neighbor and I are trying to figure out what a fair price would be for me to use his livestock scale to weigh an occasional animal for private treaty sales to a third party.

One time is a favor, but if it were to be more regular I need to pay him.

1. zero
scale stations are run by the state.

When I ran a truck scale for a business, we charged $20 flat fee.

2. thanks
I should probably have one of my own - it would really help with herd management, but alas the money for things like that always seems to be needed elsewhere first.

5. FIVE BUCKS???
Where are these $5 scales because I will pass that information on to my fellow truckers.. Must be an isolated scale because most CAT certified scales at just about every truckstop across this country will charge a minimum of $7 to about $8.50.. I've paid as much as $9 too.. But $5?? Where do tell..

8. Sounds about right....
....but the DOT is all too willing to do it free,as I have learned to my chagrin.Oh yeah, from my brother-If the DOT puts you on the portable scales, the last remark you want to hear him make is "Wow!"....

11. My experience too..
I don't know how this pertains to weighing single cattle though except that yes it's single fee for use and most CAT certified scales are $7-10$ no matter how many axles. They make their money through volume though. Be neighborly and slip your neighbor $10 or $15 for using his scale. Everyone's happy that way.

9. I have three 200,000lb scales
here in Toledo, I don't charge for the occasional check. But my dispatchers love the occasional $5 tip.

charge $5 per head to weigh only, that's if if you're not consigning. You're expected to do the loading, running down the alley and loading yourself.

12. Thanks - it never occured to me that people might do that.
I will ask them if/what they charge next time I take something in. Good idea. Pretty sure the local feed co-op has some kind of vehicle scale too. I think 5 or 10 bucks is fair for the "job".
