Texas Juneteenth mob attack neither a mob attack nor related to Juneteenth.
I'm posting this in hopes that those who here read the misinformation that was reported will take note.

The Austin Police Department on Thursday said it released incorrect information to the public about the fatal beating of David Rivas Morales near Rosewood Park.

"The police department has some responsibility in putting out accurate information," said police Assistant Chief David Carter. "We did not do that with out initial press release."
..........

Police first said thousands were in the area, and 6 to 23 people attacked Morales.

APD then said those numbers don't add up, adding officers initially released "bad information.
..........

City leaders also said a picture was painted of a mob attack, but that's not the way it was.

"It was between 15 or 20 who could have witnessed this event," said City Manager Toby Futrell.

"We are looking for 3 or 4 people responsible for this tragic assault," said city Assistant Manager Michael McDonald.

1. Thanks for the clarification
Sadly, many won't see it, and will have a picture in their mind of thousands of Juneteenth celebrators ganging up and beating the man to death. Makes you wonder if the cops had an agenda they were following when they posted the misinformation. It's got to be that, it seems-since the "thousands" are now around 20 witnesses and only 3 or 4 assailants.

3. I really doubt that many will pay any attention to what really took place
It's not as sensational as the original version. As is often the case when one is faced with reality vs. hysteria.

I'm willing to admit that I wondered if there might have been an agenda involved in the first reporting by the police, too. Even if not, that the APD let this misinformation pass as fact was not a good thing for their already strained relations with the black community in east Austin.

4. I really doubt that it was someone's agenda.
There have certainly been some problems in the police department lately, but from reports I've read in the paper, one reason it was reported that the incident was related to the Juneteenth celebration two blocks away is that, after the police and EMS arrived, lots of people came to the area to see what was happening. Perhaps some officer who was not the first to arrive concluded that all of those people were there when it happened. At first it was reported that it was a four-year-old girl. Now it turns out it was a two-year-old boy. After interviewing witnesses all day, including the driver of the car, they have a better idea of what happened. The mistake the police department made was releasing information until they had checked more thoroughly checked the facts.

5. I'm not the least bit surprised.
I also wonder, given it was the passenger, if it he was intentionally murdered, or if it was an involuntary manslaughter type incident.
