Giuliani says he made a mistake in joining Iraq Study Group

Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani said yesterday that it was a mistake for him to join the Iraq Study Group, on which he lasted just two months and failed to attend any official meetings.

Newsday reported that Giuliani was a no-show for two of the group's meetings and instead attended paid public appearances.

"I thought it would work, but then after a month or two I realized the idea that I was possibly going to run for president would be inconsistent with that," Giuliani said during a campaign stop in Iowa.

Giuliani, who often speaks of his leadership skills, said he decided the group was the wrong place for him.

"It was a mistake because I had an active political career that could interfere with the way in which the recommendations of the commission would be viewed," he said.

Giuliani campaigned in Iowa for the first time since announcing that he would skip the August straw poll, an early test of political strength. His appearance came after a series of setbacks and surprises, which prompted reporters' questions that overshadowed his speech on fiscal conservatism.

The chairman of Giuliani's campaign in South Carolina, Thomas Ravenel, was indicted on cocaine charges. Giuliani named former state GOP chairman Barry Wynn as a replacement.

1. Yeah, we wouldn't want a real leader to run for President
That's why he felt this

5. TPM Cafe shows about five months before he joined ISG, he said he was going to run.
His answer, not surprisingly, is bullshit. He bailed on the ISG because he wanted to make more money.

Must raise millions to run for president y'know, besides, he didn't wan't to answer any detailed questions about nine eleven.

3. Randi was all over it yesterday -- the real reason he never
attended any meetiings had nothing to do with potentia conflict with a presidential run --- he was in the middle of a lecture tour that raked in about 11 million for his personal wealth.

I guess that means he is lying now - surprise, surprise.

6. BS. Rudy wanted it on his resume so he could mention it during his campaign
as another example why he's such an expert on 9-11 and terrorism. He hoped his absences would be overlooked and not mentioned.

What he really regrets is the fact he was called on his hypocrisy and wanting to use the group for his mercenary purposes.

8. he didn't "realize" anything, he was kicked OFF the Iraq Study Group
Baker called him and said "if you don't start showing up for meetings we're going to replace you".

I think the post about him just wanting to put it on his resume is right. He just didn't think he'd have to DO anything to be in the "study" group.

This should be a career ender...if it were reported on MSM. Did Olbermann even say anything about it?
