Report: At least 1K barrels of oil leaked into Flying J soil
BAKERSFIELD - The county's Environmental Health Department says at least 1,000 barrels of oil leaked into the soil at the Flying J refinery on Rosedale Highway.
The county also said the leak began 10 days before the refinery reported it or began to take action to correct it.
A spokesman for Flying J denied that allegation.
Meanwhile, 30 percent of the plant remains shut down as technicians work around the clock to figure out how the oil is getting into the underground water supply.
"They don't know where its coming from," said Matt Constantine, director of the Environmental Health Department. We "don't know volume or what the product is. There are a lot of unknowns."
A thousand barrels is about 42,000 gallons -- enough to fill five average-size back yard swimming pools.
