Turn, Turn, Turn - Cindy Sheehan
June 19th, 2007

Cindy Sheehan

To everything there is a season.
A time for war, a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes, Hebrew Scriptures

I wish I could say I thought of something profound as
I saw the president and his wife’s picture on that
billboard on Hwy 317 in my rear view mirror on my way
out of Crawford today. I will be back for the final
weekend farewell to Camp Casey on July 6th, but I
won’t be back as the owner of property there, or as a
leader of the American peace movement.

The protests that were Camp Casey I and II that
evolved into the five acres on Hwy 317 (Lone Star
Parkway), which was known as Camp Casey III,
definitely were effective and served a relevant
purpose in the national discourse of the pros and cons
of the war. In an occupation that was and still is
kept far from apathetic American eyes, summer ’05 was
one of the first times the cost of BushCo’s Iraq
fiasco was made public and many people sympathized and
resonated with and some even traveled for miles to be
with the Mom in the ditch.

When I announced that I was going to put my five acres
up for sale in Texas, the horrible anti-peace;
anti-American group, Move America Forward announced
that they would buy it to erect a “Memorial.” This
group still cheer-leads and supports a war where our
troops are clearly being misused and mal-treated by
their civilian leadership and celebrates each death as
a sacrifice for the neo-con, obscene, and Orwellian
idea of “freedom.” Move America Forward is still
collecting money for their memorial, which will never
be built on my old property and if they really wanted
to buy it, they wouldn’t have sent out a press
release—they just wanted a few more minutes of fame
off of my misery!

(Not that it is a bad thing) It just seems she made a bit deal about retiring! Did she change her mind?

That is my opinion having heard her speak in person several times. This in no way detracts from her as a person or from her message. We all have different talents.Believe what you want. This is my opinion.

25. I guess folks could disagree but I not only saw and met her in PERSON but listened
to her "online." I'm glad you marched all over with Cindy...and I understand if you were always thinking that she wasn't a good enough speaker...but you need to know that there are "Differing Opinions" about what we heard from Cindy and what you might have heard "on the road" with Cindy.

The speakers and the crowd makes a big difference.

15. What's your point Sara? Why do you seem to needle and criticize
Cindy?

Are you jealous of her, her courage and conviction?

It absolutely baffles me that there are those who have this incessant need to demean and take pot shots at someone because they are in fact so admired, so powerful, so strong and so effective.

I have to say it is more revealing about those throwing careless stones than it ever could say about the soul-changing work Cindy Sheehan has begun, created and accomplished and the hearts and minds she has forever touched and changed.

16. What Criticism?
Sheehan made a big point of resigning as "the face" of the anti-war movement. She wrote a lot about it; she made sure people knew about it. The poster was just asking a question. I will too - did Sheehan make another announcement that was missed?

23. and here is a classic example of why Sheehan threads turn into flamewars
Saracat asked a simple question and you read all that into it?

The defense of Sheehan here gets a bit hysterical at times and you just proved it.

Who of you here at DU were there in Crawford last August 6, 2006?

Anyone? I was in Dallas when Cindy came to speak at the Vets For Peace Convention in August of 2005, I was there the night she started recruiting vets and activists to go with her to Crawford.

Two years in a row I was in Dallas and Crawford with Cindy. I was even there in Dallas when she was given a special award in December of 2005 at the Dallas Peace Center's annual banquet and award ceremony. I was there the next day when she met up with Al Franken at the Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas.

To make a very long story very short, Cindy lost me on August 6, 2006. Forever. She turned her back on many who had supported her the most and for no good reason.

The Crawford Peace House had scheduled a special conference about the Lebanon situation. Anyone remember what was happening then? Just a few days before, a very large and significant number of activists had published a letter in the Guardian calling on all activists world wide to demand action to end the violence. The activists signing on to this letter included Howard Zinn and Arundhati Roy, both of whom had supported Cindy.

Cindy and her troop came to town and refused to participate in the events at the Crawford Peace House, fearing what, I really can not imagine. I heard tales though. Mostly about taking away from "her" event. It really was sad to witness.

It was an incredibly harsh scene. Cindy refused to support those who at that moment in time needed her "voice of peace" most.

I'll never forget it.

I know everyone here loves her to death, for the most part, but in my very humble opinion, I've seen lots of damage done.

I honestly believe she truly needs some time and some space and I hope she spends it with family. I believe just maybe she'll find her center again and possibly get away from celebrity.

Please don't flame me. Just a very honest witness to what happened and how many folks she hurt that day.

The grace of the Lebanese community there will never leave me. They left the Peace House to go and join in with Cindy in "her" march.

There were pics from that day. I saw them here. Cindy and DeDe, marching in front with a friend walking alongside Cindy holding an umbrella to keep her out of the sun. Another pic with Cindy in "her camp" with someone else strolling alongside her with another umbrella.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just kinda, sorta tired of Cindy. I look to Granny D and I hope Cindy finds her along with maybe a few others, like maybe Peace Pilgrim or maybe even Molly I.

"I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love,
support, and financial support that has come my way
since my resignation from the peace movement. My
medical bills will be paid off and because of Bree’s
generosity, I have a financial cushion to help me on
to the next phase: helping humans who have been hurt
by US corporate imperialism. I want to also thank
everyone who has helped me along the way so far and
encourage people to stay their courses if they think
they are being productive and supported."

Where were you Cindy, on August 6, 2006 when there were many members of the peace community and many Lebanese needing your love and support? Not available, not on "your" agenda.

Yep, sorry DU, I've got an issue or two with Cindy. I do love her though, and I thank God I am not in her place. If I'd lost a child, I'm certain I would not have done as well as she has. The hero worship, it just has to stop.

20. I was there and I have no idea what you are talking about
And if you have spent time with Cindy, then surely you realize the demands that are placed upon her. It is impossible for her to do everything everyone wants her to do.

26. No, ProudtoBe, you were not at the Peace House that Day. Sorry, you just were not.
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 12:42 AM by Decruiter
You may have been out at the new camp, you may have been at the march, but you were not at the Peace House, unless you were one of the camp coming looking for sustenance (food and water}. No Proud, I did not see you at the Peace House on Sunday. Were you there for the Press Conference? Were you sitting with a couple of other brave Code Pink gals, (Des comes to mind}, I don't think you were there.

Demands placed upon Cindy that day? There were lots of demands being thrown around that morning, and Proud2Be, you just really have no idea. Proud2Be, you know not what you speak of. Thanks though, for your tireless effort and your commitment. You rock in Kansas.

On edit Proud, no demands were ever made, there was just a lot of disappointment, and a whole lot of hurt. It really was unimaginable. I wish you and I could have met.
