1. Can you imagine Rosie with Michael Moore?
Wonder how Elizabeth will handle her moral indignation for this guest and this topic.

there might actually be a conversation about the real problems facing average americans instead of all the flag waving rhetoric. Rosie was the only reason to watch that show...

6. well, "Star Parker" is making EH seem 'tame'-... i
hate that this interview with MM had to come on a day with this foolish woman as guest host.

What an obvious play by the producers to bring her out to counter what can't be 'comfortable' for the sponsors.

yeucch.... - don't know if i'll last through it.

Only started watching this because of rosie and unless they get a strong left intelligent person in there like rosie - this show will fail

33. I'll second that thought!
EH seemed moderate compared to Parker. EH hugged MM, and was gracious; while Parker could only muster a handshake. Her "question" was more like an editorial :eyes:. Even her co-hosts grew weary, prodding her to ask her question already. She totally creeped me out. :puke:

52. I don't think we have to worry about Parker being asked back on
this show. Barbara Walters couldn't hide her frustration with this woman - the woman was way over the top in trying to dominate the entire show and I don't think it went over well with anyone on the show or anyone watching. I hope I never see that woman again.

14. point being?
amidst the din, I didn't hear her make that point. did she. the whole segment was pretty much a waste, as Star Parker kept SHOUTING over Moore, as he tried to speak.

btw, SS was NEVER meant to be anything but a supplement to retirement funding, ostensibly to be provided by one's employer-funded program.

we all know what happened to that, and now millions are forced to try to live on this pittance, included a LARGE portion of those poor who 'don't work because they're either disabled or retired'

care to amplify your statement a bit?

23. I was just guessing where she might be coming from -
obviously I can not read her mind

The poor get squat in this country and no way out

SS is working for those who had large salaries paid into it for at least 5 years - the rest are getting a check but with housing being out of control their check goes less far

and yes the employers stopped giving retirement or it was stolen like at enron and given to the widow of the felon without recourse

Sorry if you chose to take this as an attack because of some personal issues in your own life or someone you know

It was just a statement that the poor who don't pay in, don't get to take out either.

But we don't have a system for the poor that has worked because the corporations are unwilling to pay them living wages anymore which they were forced to with unions - but the corporate marketing machine has gotten so many people to think unions are no good that they have disolved and now workers mostly have no protection for decent pay.

so spin it what ever way you want -

sorry if you misinterpreted my response.

I'll try to tiptoe a little more softly on your apparently tender sensibilities next time

we seem to agree on the substance, particularly on the union part.

thanks for your amplification

20. his refrence was to how this government run "retirement plan" which
is a 'sort of' socialized program actually DOES work.

Kids can collect SS even if they haven't worked, as can spouses.- even divorced ones in many cases.

At least it works better than no program. What 'Star' wasn't acknowledging is that the working poor who don't get insurance, and cannot afford it- can't afford the medical bills either, and we aren't eligible for medicaid unless we become completely destitute.-

She also mentioned that she can PURCHASE insurance- I'd like to know how the average person can purchase insurance, never mind having any kind of pre-existing conditions, which eliminates many many people.

30. Yup, SS is universal. The amount is determined by the # of calendar quarters worked
Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 11:27 AM by Bozita
Work one day in a quarter? You get credit for working in that quarter. The more quarters worked, the bigger the check.

32. uh... not quite right - at least as
it has been explained to me.

I became disabled when i had only 18 credits, and needed 21 to get ssdi- so i got ssi for awhile.
in order to get any 'medicare' or 'social security payments' when i reach retirement age, i have to catch up the credits-

If i earn 1,000$ in a 'quarter'- I get credit for a quarter- if i earn less than that, even though i've 'worked' the quarter, i don't get credit- (self-employed)

i'll never have any medicare- or ss benefits. It's a given at this point. My father died before he got to recieve more than a few months of ss payments, my mother followed him 4 mos later.- I don't begrudge the system their 'uncollected' benefits. I only wish the system worked a little better for those of us at the very bottom of the pile.

peace,
blu

64. unless they are
disabled and receiving SSI (supplemental security income) for people who are unable to work (must be proven to the satisfaction of SS office, and is often denied to most people initially- it isn't 'easy' to get this if you aren't actually unable to work in my own experience, and knowledge)

SSI is 'means' tested- you can't have any 'resources' in excess of $1,000- (i'm not sure if this varies state to state). If you do, you have to use them up until you become eligible-

Your friends might be receiving SS money as the child of a beneficiary- I'm not sure how this works, but I knew someone who had 2 of her children receiving SS payments because of her ex- They weren't disabled that I know of, and her other kids couldn't benefit from the money she received for the care of the "2".

I'd suggest you ask your friends how they manage- It is much better than my speculating, :P- but more importantly, sometimes there are real reasons that people receive assistance which aren't immediately obvious, and sometimes people make assumptions that someone is on "assistance" or "welfare" and it is nothing of the kind.-
I hope you feel comfortable asking them, and I'd be interested in knowing more if you learn anything that is different than what I've been able to share.

thanks-:hi:

69. oh, but her spouse
must have payed in- and she is collecting on her spouse's eligibility.
(rightly so, since she also 'worked' even if without pay or recognition)

I don't believe there is any other way to collect, unless you are a beneficiary of someone who paid in, paid in yourself, or are getting payments due to being disabled and impoverished.

but i could be wrong-
peace,
blu

(even if she and her spouse are divorced, she could still be a benificiary- as i would be at retirement age, if my ex hadn't quit working, and hadn't gone underground)

maybe Foxnews should hire him as a journalist, seeing as how they don't spend any time on Iran/Iraq anymore, which is curious, because all the wingnuts keep screaming about all the GREAT NEWS there is out there that the liberal media never report.

seems Fox would have a monopoly on all that good news

All the TV shows I liked have either been cancelled (Studio 60) or are no longer on the air (West Wing, Gilmore Girls, Sex in the City, Will & Grace, etc.). Now I can finally do my homework without missing anything! It's just now that I have a short break between classes, there is nothing to watch! I guess it's time to catch up on my reading.

how to stay off the internet:silly: now as well.

Our life sans tv was perhaps the happiest, and healthiest it has ever been. We had music, and radio - if we desired, but much of the time we had the sounds of birds, life- enough 'sensory' stimulation on its own- time to consider trying again-

Happy reading- or relaxing- or daydreaming. I'm among the first generation to grow up with "tv"- and wonder if some of the struggles we face today are caused in many ways by it's intrusion into 'life'-

(sorry I'm derailing this thread- just wanted to encourage you-:hi:)

60. That's the problem I suppose...
At least when Boston Legal does it, they have Denny Crane and Brad as their token Republicans... Studio 60 is the epitome of "Liberal" Hollywood. I would love to see that show develop more. It hasn;t even got its legs yet... but it's probably easier and cheaper to put another "reality" or "24-esque" show in their time slot. God forbid they do something original or thought provoking.

Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 12:18 PM by WinkyDink
And explain how Europeans pay high taxes, but get health care, college educations, etc.

That the Federal govt manages to get SS checks delivered like clockwork.

That Nixon had secret tapes discussing HMO's, allowing them to make profits while doctors GAVE LESS CARE. "Sicko" reveals these tapes to the public for the first time.

That we defeated the Nazis, Japan, and Italy and STILL can't, in a longer time period, secure the road from the Baghdad airport to the capital. "We used to do things right."

That 47 million Americans have no health insurance.

That, said to Star, reminding her she is a "born-again Christian", universal health-care is following Christ's words of "As you do to the least, so you do unto Me"; that He will ask 3 questions of us: Did you feed the hungry? Did you clothe the naked? Etc.
That, instead of "socialized medicine", maybe it would be better to call it "Christianized medicine" (audience applauded).
Star protested, over the applause, that Christ never said to "take from your neighbor" to help; that it is "the individual" who is to help.

That, when BW asked why he interviewed no reps from insurance or pharmaceutical companies for "Sicko", they have ADS ON TV EVERY NIGHT, so his 2-hour movie is simply a small balance.

Then he can get a word in edgewise. I'll watch it then.

36. Barbara slapped down the RW bee-yotch REPEATEDLY, holding her hand
up in front of the latter's face, telling her to WAIT her TURN, interrupting her lecture to remind her to ASK a QUESTION. HAHA!

BW ALSO called "Sicko" "brilliant"!

40. Star Parker is one dumb woman.
I don't know how I managed to sit through her rambling.

I thought the Moore interview was good, and fair.

48. Wow! She "reformed" herself by selling her soul to the devil.
Her website has a big puff piece on what a great company Wal-Mart is for offering some $4 prescriptions. She claims to be a "Christian" but is spouting the health care insurance profiteers' talking points that promote a system that kills people for profits. She slams Hillary for not taking responsibility for her vote for the Iraq invasion, but is completely SILENT about the Bush administration's obfuscation and bungling. She is "pro-life" but only after SHE managed to have FOUR abortions herself. She is morally superior to people currently on welfare because SHE managed to get off welfare by making a living spouting right wing talking points about the EVILS of anything that can be labeled "socialism".

She really couldn't defend herself at the end.
