KC mayor appoints Minuteman woman to board position
KC council seeks park board member’s resignation

* Groups call for resignation of controversial park board member; Funkhouser refuses Video from the Associated Press VIDEO
* Funkhouser rejects Semler’s resignation offer; councilman to call for her removal

In its first rebuke of Mayor Mark Funkhouser, the City Council has condemned his controversial appointment to the parks board.

The council voted 9-3-1 this afternoon to call for Frances Semler to immediately resign her days-old appointment to the Board of Parks and Recreation. In a resolution, the council said if she does not do so within a week then Funkhouser should recommend the council remove her.

It is a symbolic resolution that says Semeler’s appointment will be “a divisive force in our community rendering the work” of the parks board “suspect.”

While not legally binding, it is a public reprimand to the mayor as he faces controversy over Semler’s views on immigration, both legal and illegal.

Councilwoman Beth Gottstein said city appointees should be “models for our community,” and Semler would not be, especially with the “Latin community speaking out with such force.”

Councilmen Terry Riley and John Sharp said their call for Semler’s resignation has nothing to do with her anti-immigration stance, but her affiliation with the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.

1. as an aside, Funkhouser is the ass-kickingest name i've ever heard
i'll use that as my new alias...

but back on topic, there is a LOT of anti-undocumented mexican resentment where i live (bill 'o called us out after that drunk driving incident which has been used as a political scapegoat), and i fear it's only a matter of time before minutemen sympathizers infest local and state government...

5. there is still a difference
between wanting to make reasonable change, and making easy political scapegoat targets out of people with darker skin and a different language...

yes, you can crack down on the central americans themselves, but there are other preventative steps along the way that could be utilized, but are conveniently forgotten by the pols

3. We have a large Hispanic community here
And the Minutemen aren't very popular. This was a dumb move by Funkhouser.
