You may know that I lost my job at the same time I was being treated for cancer a little more than 18 months ago. I was physically unable to look for work for a while and finally decided to retool and learn a new profession after I felt better. So I returned to school by entering a paralegal study program. Now, I have 3 classes this summer and an elective to pick up in the fall. Last Monday, I started a paralegal job which is temporary and will last for the duration of the summer. It will satisfy my internship requirements too. I spent early last week doing all kinds of scut work, and essentially reorganized the office, caught up back filing, retired files, reprogrammed their phone system, set up a mail distribution system..etc. Well, Friday I was handed my first casework and I was able to get a petition fully processed late on a Friday afternoon (scored some points on that one). Today I handed the senior partner a plotted timeline he had not considered and which will better support his case as he argues it next week.

AND.......

I learned that the paralegal who they had hired two weeks before I started has received a scholarship to go to school in another state--an opportunity that the individual will take before my summer job ends. I overheard a couple staff members telling the big boss today that they wished I could stay on beyond the summer. I need good vibes this summer. This job is 3 miles from my home. I like this firm. The people there are pretty down-to-earth and are not full of themselves. They deal with the needs of a rural population and are very people oriented.


This summer has to have a great ending...

I'm so excited about this and my DU family has been so supportive through the roughest of times. I really appreciate how you tolerate my rants and have heard me out when I was feeling ill, scared, and down. If this is a success, you all have a share in it.

but your best hope is either that they hire a paralegal from a temp agency until you graduate or that they're willing to work short to have you take up the slack in unofficial duties, something it looks like you're doing very nicely as it is.
