I'm using the New Safari for Windows beta browser.
This is a very, very slick program. It has tabs, which I have never had the advantage of before. It loads quickly, seems to handle various blog formats quite well, which cannot be said of IE, which has been my browser for a couple of years. Clean, simple interface... Pages seem to load much quicker than in IE or Flicker - much quicker.

I think I am going to enjoy using this browser, although I will use it for a week or so before I render judgement overall.

Is anyone else trying out Safari for Windows? Let me know what you learn...

And thanks, Steve Jobs, for the freeware!

2. What about security?

I'm using Firefox mainly because it's a more secure browser than IE (billy-ware). Do you have any info on Safari's security?

Also can you provide a download link.

Have you ever used Firefox.... any comparisons?

19. Has anyone written code that lets SafariWin users masquerade as Macs,
rather than letting probes reveal they're running XP or Vista? If attackers don't know you're using Windows, and think you're using Mac OS, will their attack software back off?

Such a piece of code, if reliable, would be particularly satisfying for users running Windows on Mac hardware, under the Mac OS's dual-boot add-in. They might be able to enjoy the same disinterest from attackers they're used to having under Mac OS.

5. I use Firefox and have tried Safari on a Mac
I like Firefox better but it may be that I am so familiar with it that I am biased. I haven't tried Safari on a PC but it worked well on the Mac.

3. There are already 0day exploits for it... AVOID!
Apple's record for security is very bad, you just don't hear much about it as the Mac is a much, much smaller target than the PCs (less market share, less desire to wreak havoc). Safari for Windows already has 0-day exploits which will allow any web site to execute arbitrary commands on your PC.

Here's one of them, so you know I am not joshing you:

http://larholm.com/2007/06/12/safari-for-windows-0day-exploit-in-2-hours/

That, and Safari has font problems, just like OS X... but that's the subject for another post.

11. very bad?
i'd like for you to cite some examples, and then compare with say... microsoft's patch history within the same time frame.

also - safari for windows is still beta.

(ps- i detest safari, so don't even bother with any sort of "apple fanboy" remarks)

14. You've drank the Mac kool-ade, I see...
I am not saying OS X is bad, it's quite decent. And if you are relatively unaware of how to run your personal computer beyond pointy-clicky, then a default OS X install is safer than a default Windows XP install. Vista is much safer out of the box than even OS X.

Apple seems to just make an application (or an OS) and release it, without really being concerned about security. It's essentially the way Microsoft was up until around 2002, when the shit really started to hit the fan.

You can shore up your safety in both of these OSes by not running as a user with Administrator privileges. Unfortunately, so many PC and Mac users just love giving themselves these enhanced rights for everyday computing.

16. so what you're trying to say
...is that you're actually quite ignorant on this topic.

You do understand that OS X is based around FreeBSD, right?
You are aware that Vista had 0day *os level* exploits, right?

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2073611,00.asp
http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/3634

You are railing on a *BETA* web browser, and lumping in the entire company's offers with it.

Again, i'd like to see a list of apple security patches/holes/fixes compared with a list of ms security patches (and hell, i'll be an asshole too - why not cross reference that list against a REAL os such as Solaris?) in the same time period. Bonus points for remote exploits (double bonus points for remote exploits that haven't been patched yet).

Oh give me a break. :eyes: (Also, do you not realize how insulting that is to the innocents who died at Jonestown?) I've had a mac for only 5 years, I've found it to be far superior to my PC in every way. Besides, negativenihil has got you 0wned way better than I can put it

10. What makes it better than Firefox?
I'm completely mercenary about browsers, and I hate Microsoft's tendency to make us pay full price to beta test their shitty code that they practically hardwire into their operating system. I use Firefox now, and it is far superior to that IE piece of shit that tried to copy Firefox. Is Safari better than Firefox, or just better than IE, and why?

13. I do not think so.
Safari is very fast with page loads, but that is not everything. A Firefox with extensions installed is still a far better browser. One of the first things I looked for was to see if Safari has an extensions system. Apparently, it does not.

Bookmark management on Safari is particularly cumbersome, at least at first.

It's ok and I have it installed, to help me with building websites, but it doesn't make me feel movement in my nether regions.
