DEMS Should Have Voted On A Resolution of CONFIDENCE for Gonzales
What would have the Repugs done then??

A vote of NO Confidence gave them an easy way out!

2. They would have done the same thing - vote against cloture to avoid the whole thing...
Edited on Tue Jun-12-07 07:44 AM by GOTV
Why? They would easily make the case that the resolution was meaningless and just stood in the way of actual business. And people can understand that.

6. But they won't be "on the spot" if they vote against cloture...
... it's standard Senate mechanism for avoiding uncomfortable votes.

7. Any vote can be "spun" skillfully, but wouldn't MassDemm's proposal have
made it harder for GOP spinmeisters? GOP pols would have to explain why they didn't want to stand up for their AG, rather than why they didn't want to subject their AG to potential embarrassment.

10. A no-cloture vote saves you from embarrassing choices. It's like a legaslative 5th amendment....
They don't want to express support because Gonzo is incompetent, maybe even criminal, and they don't want to embarrass the prez..

So, on a no-confidence vote they refuse cloture and there, they saved the prez from embarrassment without saying where they stand on Gonzo.

On a total-confidence vote they refuse cloture and avoid having to say where they stand on Gonzo. It's not a blow to the prez to have a total-confidence vote blocked.

5. And I said the same thing, too, but on another list.
I'd love to get those Republics on record as supporting this miscreant.
