Escherichia coli O157:H7

What can you do to prevent E. coli O157:H7 infection?

Cook all ground beef and hamburger thoroughly. Because ground beef can turn brown before disease-causing bacteria are killed, use a digital instant-read meat thermometer to ensure thorough cooking. Ground beef should be cooked until a thermometer inserted into several parts of the patty, including the thickest part, reads at least 160º F. Persons who cook ground beef without using a thermometer can decrease their risk of illness by not eating ground beef patties that are still pink in the middle.


If you are served an undercooked hamburger or other ground beef product in a restaurant, send it back for further cooking. You may want to ask for a new bun and a clean plate, too.


Avoid spreading harmful bacteria in your kitchen. Keep raw meat separate from ready-to-eat foods. Wash hands, counters, and utensils with hot soapy water after they touch raw meat. Never place cooked hamburgers or ground beef on the unwashed plate that held raw patties. Wash meat thermometers in between tests of patties that require further cooking.


Drink only pasteurized milk, juice, or cider. Commercial juice with an extended shelf-life that is sold at room temperature (e.g. juice in cardboard boxes, vacuum sealed juice in glass containers) has been pasteurized, although this is generally not indicated on the label. Juice concentrates are also heated sufficiently to kill pathogens.


Wash fruits and vegetables under running water, especially those that will not be cooked. Be aware that bacteria are sticky, so even thorough washing may not remove all contamination. Remove the outer leaves of leafy vegetables. Children under 5 years of age, immunocompromised persons, and the elderly should avoid eating alfalfa sprouts until their safety can be assured. Persons at high risk of complications from foodborne illness may choose to consume cooked vegetables and peeled fruits.


Drink municipal water that has been treated with chlorine or another effective disinfectant.


Avoid swallowing lake or pool water while swimming. (For more information, see the CDC Healthy Swimming website.)


Make sure that persons with diarrhea, especially children, wash their hands carefully with soap after bowel movements to reduce the risk of spreading infection, and that persons wash hands after changing soiled diapers. Anyone with a diarrheal illness should avoid swimming in public pools or lakes, sharing baths with others, and preparing food for others.

17. Thanks. And this: grind your own meat. We like rare burgers but don't buy
packaged ground beef or other meat...we buy big hunks (roasts) and grind them up at home. Chances of E coli in a large cut are small and can be safely washed off if there happens to be some. And we grind a lot of deer that WE have butchered and we KNOW it was done properly. Also there is no 100% guarantee that even home-grown vegetables are free of harmful bacteria - no way to know what roving bird or animal has dumped on your garden.
Which is why washing them is important.

6. I've had e. coli and it is AWFUL
I thought I was going to die. I swear I did. That is without a doubt the sickest I've been in my life. Though to be fair, I've been generally pretty lucky, health-wise.

Just cook your meat, people. Don't trust any ground beef at all. I don't even eat hamburgers because there is no way to have a burger taste good and ensure it's cooked through well enough. Actually, I can't remember the last time I had ground beef in any dish at all. I just don't trust it.

13. No, better to start stocking up on adaptive dna.
Might help to adapt suddenly, start eating uranium ore people. Make it a salt replacement. Stick you head in the microwave and dry your hair more often. :crazy:

I was just commenting about another method used with our food that people might not be aware of. I wasn't actually suggesting people irradiate rotten food and eat it, although we probably eat some of it without knowing about it.

11. Organic Grass fed free ranged beef that has *NEVER* been feed lotted is as
safe as it gets.Nothing in life is 100%, but when you take animals out that environment and start dealing with real people that are your neighbors that you build relationships of trust with that go far beyond any USDA stamp, real people that take pride in their work and their product instead of trying to squeeze every last penny out that beeve they're selling then you're gonna get a quality piece of meat that you can trust a damn sight further than anything that came out of any chain store, including whole foods or wild oats or trader Joe's or any other pig all dressed up in frills and lipstick.

it gets on the blades when meat is processed, which is why it's so much more of a threat in ground beef - the blades have been all through the meat.

Edit - what I mean is that it's about processing more than raising.

20. True, but the feed-lotted beef has spent weeks standing around
in it's own filth and that of hundreds or thousands of other head, eating a diet it was bever intended to eat which is gonna make it sick. consequently feedlot beef is usuallycovered with manure on it's hide and commercial slaughter houses don't do a whole lot more than rinse before they kill and gut, so even if they're careful about making sure the colon contents don't contaminate the rest of the meat there's the whole problem w/ how contaminated the beeve is going into the facility.

22. Actually no, they have been out of the business of protecting us
from such things - like our food supply for about 3 years now. It was just recently they gutted the FDA and said you don't have to tell people crap about what we put in their food. Corporations loved that idea, who knew?
