"The Army doesn't massacre the Indians. It massacres demons, and the Indians are demon possessed; they are communists. We hold Brother Efraín Ríos Montt like King David of the Old Testament. He is the king of the New Testament." - Unknown RW pastor praising former Guatemalan dictator, Rios Montt.
During the later part of the 20th Century, it was hip for the US to support Far Right dictators in the belief that as long as they weren't Communist then it was a good thing.
However, Efrain Rios Montt was just so much of a horrible excuse for a human being, atrocity after atrocity against indigenous indians, that the US cut off support for him. However, that didn't mean that there couldn't be private support for his regime. The Christian Right gave him over a million dollars and Pat Robertson interviewed Rios Montt and pledged support for his murderous dictatorship.
It's sad that most of the people who supported his dictatorships and others are now praising Bush and saying that we are truly spreading freedom to the Middle East.
Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it, and we forgot it when we let these Right Wing wackos take over the government.
