A Fiendish Insurgent Low: Coffin Bomb
Four Iraqi Police Officers Wounded When Bomb in Casket Explodes
Posted 2 hr. 58 min. ago

Baghdad, June 10, (VOI) – Four policemen were wounded when a coffin bomb went off in the district of al-Sayediya, western Baghdad, an Iraqi police source said on Saturday.

"A coffin containing the body of an unidentified man was laid on a road side in al-Sayediya as reported by a citizen on Saturday evening," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"The bomb laid inside the coffin went off as policemen drew near it, wounding four of them," the source added.

The wounded policemen, including one officer in the rank of Lieutenant, were rushed to the al-Yarmuk hospital, the source said.

1. Think They Have A Right To Defend Themselves
I really think the Iraqis have the right to defend themselves by any means necessary. Of course, I could never understand why they seem to be killing each other more in sectarian violence. That would seem to play right into an imperialist's powers hands...

8. There are a lot of places, and Iraq is one of them, where "police"....
Are not the "good guys"..

That is even true here in the US sometimes.

Just think of the ninety year old granny that got shot and had drugs planted in her house by police in Atlanta fairly recently.

9. Hello! the police _are_ the death squads over there
as much as any other group. In fact on the Shia side they are the main "death squad" force. Not just "terrorists" or bomb tossers, but death squads--the fine folks responsible for piles of tortured dead bodies.

I'm not saying these individual police were Shia death squad members, but many are. That is how fucked up things are over there. Your angry but ill-informed outburst shows that Americans still have a lot to learn about how terrible a mistake our invasion has been.

Google can teach you.

Iraq police death squad arrested at checkpoint
Oliver Poole, Telegraph

Baghdad, February 17, 2006

The United States military announced yesterday that it had captured an Iraqi police "death squad".
It was the first time one of the uniformed Shia Muslim groups that Sunni Arabs claim have killed hundreds in recent months has been identified in public.
Twenty-two highway police officers, wearing police commando uniforms, were held in late January at an Iraqi army checkpoint in north Baghdad.
When asked where they were going, they answered that they were taking away a Sunni man to shoot him.
"The amazing thing is they tell you exactly what they're going to do," said Maj Gen Joseph Peterson, the head of police training. "We have found one of the death squads. They are part of the police force."
Bodies of Iraqis, many bound and gagged, have been turning up in Baghdad for months. Twelve were found yesterday in the Shula suburb, all handcuffed, shot in the head and dumped at a roadside.
Sunnis have blamed many of the murders on death squads operated by the security forces, with witnesses providing testimony of uniformed men taking people from Sunni households. But previously there has been no independent proof to substantiate their reports of extra-judicial killings.

In Basra, a British officer warned that similar squads were responsible for 140 murders over the past three months, more than double the number killed between May and November.

Iraq's death squads: On the brink of civil war
Most of the corpses in Baghdad's mortuary show signs of torture and execution. And the Interior Ministry is being blamed. By Andrew Buncombe and Patrick Cockburn
Published: 26 February 2006

Hundreds of Iraqis are being tortured to death or summarily executed every month in Baghdad alone by death squads working from the Ministry of the Interior, the United Nations' outgoing human rights chief in Iraq has revealed.(the Ministry of Interior: aka, the police--k.b.)

* * *
Many of the 110,000 policemen and police commandos under the ministry's control are suspected of being former members of the Badr Brigade. Not only counter-insurgency units such as the Wolf Brigade, the Scorpions and the Tigers, but the commandos and even the highway patrol police have been accused of acting as death squads.

10. So you're saying they DON'T have the right
to defend themselves from police, even if said police are the "bad" guys?

11. And by "defend" themselves...
Edited on Sun Jun-10-07 12:01 PM by India3
You mean cowardly blow up police trying to peacefully collect what they thought was a dead body inside a coffin. The Iraqi police are just that...Iraqi. Don't you think a country MIGHT need some sort of police force? You know, just like every other civilized country on Planet Earth?

The Iraqi police, just like any police, aren't going to be perfect, and if a Shiite police officer storms your house in a sectarian raid? Yeah, defend yourself to the fullest. But setting a booby trap for police who were probably just doing their job and trying to provide for their families? You'd have to be absolutely batshit insane to believe that................

"But..But...Bush supports the Iraqi police, so they must be bad, and in turn the insurgency must be good" PUKE. Does the insurgency have the right to blow up mosques and marketplaces as well?

Thanks DU. You guys are great, and should be real proud of yourselves. Get back on your medication and stop screaming at the passing cars.

3. Vietnam Vets here will tell you
similar things happened in Vietnam, usually boobytrapping bodies of US soldiers to kill or wound their friends when they came to retrieve them.

War is a sick, horrible thing. It does terrible things to people's psyches, values, minds.

4. There will be such things
and it will never stop. Anyone who is surprised at the inventiveness that the "insurgents" are capable of must really believe the people "over there" are inferior.

I know if my country was invaded and occupied I would also stop at nothing to cause the invaders harm.

6. We took the party to them. Subtract that fact
from the equation and you most likely don't have such a tactic used against us and the coffin goes peacefully into the ground where it belongs.
