Helpful weather alert device for our DU'ers in volatile weather areas:
I just got one (below) and it's less than $50. I programmed it to my county specifically--there are up to 7 counties you can individually program. If the National Weather Service issues any kind of Weather Alert for your county it sounds an alarm--which scares the kitty in my house-- and then plays the entire National Weather Alert message and current conditions. The small light on the top flashes red as long as your programmed county is under alert.

Portable so you can put it beside the bed if you go to sleep while the weather is bad and you're worried about tornados.

* S.A.M.E. technology helps eliminate false alarms
* Receives NOAA weather broadcasts on 7 frequencies
* Over 95% USA coverage
* Digital panel displays up to 56 messages
* Built-in fahrenheit/celcius thermometer
* Freeze warning alert
* Dual alarm clock with snooze
* 9 memory settings
* Water resistant
* In-unit battery charging

5. I've had a SAME radio for about 9 years now.
Not *the* same radio, but a SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) weather radio. Very useful device, for sure. I got it after a line of tornadoes hit my area - I figured that the more notice I had, the better.

BTW, since the OP didn't include a link... http://www.amazon.com/Midland-74-250C-Handheld-Weather-Alert/dp/B00009Q39V

7. It's cool...I have a small weather radio that's been good for years but
problem is...you go to bed after seeing a weather alert for your area on TV..and then the ALARM starts to sound and it's for a County in my State pretty far away. I'm looking for one that can be programmed for just the immediate counties around me because the alarms can be pretty annoying when they go off about every 15 minutes.

Is this one programmable for Counties? Thanks!

10. Yes
SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) will let you program down to the county level, and often, sub-county regions.

16. Yes, as my OP says
"I programmed it to my county specifically--there are up to 7 counties you can individually program."

If you Google "Midland Weather Radio" you can find some links to buy it, plus there are similar ones on the market too for about the same price.

9. kick for those who live in "weather" areas.
Living on a hill in W.WA, I have to worry about mold and slugs. If we get an earthquake, or 1 of the mountains blows, we will know and the weather, while sometimes windy (I really hate big winds), tornadoes are very very very rare. I'm glad to live in such a blah-weather place when watching tornadoes back where I grew up.

18. The Firefox Accuweather Plug In is better
I've had weather radios for years
My boat's radio has the Robo-voice of the NWS if I want it

But this is much much better

#1- switch to Firefox
(you should have done it a long time ago anyway)

#2 get the Accuweather plug in
( it's at mozilla in the frefox plug ins section
(btw there are hundreds of plug ins)

#3
Put your zipcode into it
now you're locked and loaded
You've got weather for your zip at your bottom toolbar 24/7
Plus
ther's a green dot there
place your cursor over it anytime you want
and a pop-up happens
with your real-time current radar
click on it
and you get it 10 different ways

much much better
Love it
