Senate to Consider Gonzales Motion on Monday
Friday, June 8; 1:50 pm

The Senate on Monday plans to take up a no-confidence vote on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Gonzales no-confidence vote set for Monday. The Senate’s no-confidence vote on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will take place Monday.

The nonbinding resolution would express the “sense of the Senate” that Gonzales “no longer holds the confidence of the American people.”

But the resolution’s sponsor, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), sounded uncertain the measure would receive the 60 votes needed for passage.

Six Republicans have called on Gonzales to resign but it’s unclear whether any of them will support a no-confidence vote.

“If all Senators who have actually lost confidence in Attorney General Gonzales voted their conscience, this vote would be unanimous,” Schumer said in a statement. “However, the president will certainly exert pressure to support the attorney general, his longtime friend. We will soon see where people’s loyalties lie.”

1. Thanks to Gonzales' stonewalling, the story is not clear.
Republicans are in denial -- as usual. Somehow Democrats have not presented this story clearly. Story fragments are available but no one has tied the bits and pieces together to depict a picture of corruption and graft that Republicans can understand. It is not enough today to be able to spew a lot of hot air. The Democrats need to hire lawyers to prepare briefs on these scandals and to explain to the American people what wrongs have been committed and why these wrongs are serious. The Republicans work with a number of prominent lawyers who speak out on these issues. There sides of the stories are always succinctly presented. Why aren't Democraats doing the same thing?
