73. the interesting thing is Gore received 51 million votes and Kerry 59 million
so Kerry got many more votes than Gore but a lesser percentage of the vote because turnout in '04 was much bigger than in '00.

Paleeeeeeese...give that old meme a break.

He won. Had they not stolen the election in so many states, suppressed so many voters, and hid their tracks so well, he'd be in the White House today.

And hmmm..."The media adored him..."

What kind of koolaid are you drinking there? You ARE TALKING about THE MEDIA that gave 24/7 FREE AIRTIME TO the SBV's even AFTER THEY WERE DEBUNCTED. Yep...given that kind of lovin' maybe we can ask them to throw some lovin' at the Republicans too.

44. "Least electable".....what BS.
He almost ran the table in the primaries and he had more Democratic votes than any other candidate in the GE...except Bush which I think was fixed. I remember the huge crowds that came out for Kerry...30-40,000 people turning out. I also remember never seeing Bush campaigning in public, just in small auditoriums where camera's were tightly controlled.

We got screwed in 2004. Hope we are smarter in 2008.

53. Doing well in the Primaries does NOT make one electable in November!
John Forbes Kerry was the media's pick for the Democratic nomination: indecisive, stiff, boring, and not a fighter. Why did they spread the meme that Dean was unelectable? Because they were too afraid of him; they knew that he would take the fight to the bastard.

And so they deceived people. In so doing, they helped nominate Kerry, and sadly, Bush is still in the White House because of it.

74. Gee, that's strange. I distinctly remember DEAN on the Time mag. cover,
not Kerry. The media just mindlessly follows the horse race and are just godawful. Kerry was NOT the media favorite. Once Dean crashed and burned, then EDWARDS became the media favorite. I remember distinctly, that once Kerry won, suddenly it was how great Edwards delivered a speech. Kerry won IN SPITE of the media, which labeled him a loser. Then aloof. And so on ...

76. Dean flopped...sorry to rain on your parade.
I liked Dean, contributed to his campaign early on, and couldn't be happier that he is DNC chair. But you are deluding yourself if you think the media was the sole reason that Dean lost. His scream came after he lost in Iowa, not before it. Kerry kicked his ass....and then proceeded to run the table like no Democrat I've ever seen (and I've been voting since '72). There is no way that Dean would have beaten Bush and the Republican crooked election machine...none. The RNC would have had a field day with Dean. If they could swift boat an honorable veteran like Kerry, what would they have done with Dean who never served?

Your "unelectable" baloney is precisely what the Republican MSM would have us believe...thanks for amplifying their message here.

78. No, the media thanks YOU for spreading the 'Dean was unelectable' lie
The 'liberal' media scared Democrats into believing that Dean couldn't win, so Bush wouldn't have to face someone who would hold Bush's feet to the fire AND who would make a great President.

It's sad that the media won.

79. Kerry vs. Dean - my choice had nothing to do with the media.
Sorry, I was more than happy to choose Kerry. I've followed JK since the early 70's. I knew he was the man I wanted to be our President. Not taking anything away from Dean...I'd have been perfectly fine if he had won the election. But he didn't because rank and file Democrats overwhelmingly chose Kerry.

But that's the difference between me and you. You can't get over your favorite losing....and happily diss the one who wins. I would never think to slam Dean had he won the primaries and lost the GE. I'd even have defended him against any Kerry fans who might have used your words: "least electable" to knock our nominee.

Seriously, if Dean couldn't win his own Party nomination, how do you figure he was "most electable"? Stop blaming the media and other Democrats who chose someone you didn't back. You can argue whether Dean might have been the best Democrat in the primaries, but the results clearly indicate that Kerry was the most electable Democrat in 2004.

If you were happy to pick Kerry, fine.

But don't accuse me of not being able to get over it, just because I said what was on my mind.

I'll say what I belive to be the truth. If I believe that the media is responsible for a good man not becoming President, it's my right to say so as an American, and gosh damnit, I'm going to use that right until the Bush Cabal pries ity from my cold, dead hands.

Oh, and once again...

WINNING THE NOMINATION DOES NOT - REPEAT, ***DOES NOT*** - GUARANTEE THAT THAT PERSON WAS THE MOST ELECTABLE!!!!!

81. Problem is, your bold statement is totally untestable and unprovable.
Edited on Tue Jun-05-07 02:41 AM by Old and In the Way
It's your opinion, not a fact or the truth. Dean didn't win, so we will never know if your statement is true. My opinion is you are flat wrong. I will state a fact, though. NOT WINNING THE NOMINATION DOES - REPEAT, ***DOES*** GUARANTEE THAT THAT PERSON WAS NOT THE MOST ELECTABLE!!!!!!

Dean was the darling of the anti-war Democrats and he deserves credit for being the first in taking a high profile position against the war and this administration. He raised a ton of money on the internet (including a couple of donations from me). But he was relatively unknown to the general voting population, was a governor of a pretty tiny state, and never won a state Presidential primary. It's also my opinion that, had Dean been nominated, Rove would have feasted on Dean. He'd have been Dukakisized. I assume you would argue that Dean was to the left of Kerry (debatable). Assuming that is true, how does he pull more centrist/conservative votes than Kerry? Who on the Left didn't vote for Kerry in 2004? How many more votes would Dean have gotten from Independents and unhappy Republicans?

The sad truth is...it wouldn't matter. Any Democrat running in the 2004 GE would have won the election if it hadn't been stolen through systematic voter suppression and election fraud.

By all means, keep singing the blues about how Dean was robbed and murdered by the media....and with it the elitist inference that the Democratic voter is not smart enough to make an intelligent decision on who best represents their interests. But understand when you make a bold statement that Kerry was "least electable", you really ought to bring a few facts with you to support your argument. Your belief that Dean was the most electable Democratic candidate conflicts with the reality of a 0 for 50 record in the 2004 primaries.

84. No - that is NOT a fact!!!
That is called a theory.

"Any Democrat running in the 2004 GE would have won the election if it hadn't been stolen through systematic voter suppression and election fraud." Really? Somehow, I just can't picture a President Sharpton.

You know why so many voted for Bush over Kerry? Because Bush was perceived as being stronger than Kerry. Dean wasn't afraid to take the fight to Bush. If he had been the nominee, would there have been any mistake that Dean was tough?

Oh, and about that "reality of a 0 for 50 record in the 2004 primaries." Actually, that's wrong. He did win a primary.

64. He had such a ground swell of support but the media had to "fix"
the meme; otherwise, the Republicans would have no chance of successfully hiding the results.

We got screwed in 04. The media told 10% of the truth in 04. In o6 they told 20% of the truth. But after the November elections they're now up to 35% of the truth. It's still a Republican media, but people are so sick of being lied to, stolen from, and bilked that more and more people KNOW the media is liars. (In 04, people still thought Fox News was fair and balanced! Now they all admit it's REPUBLICAN NEWS.) So in 08, just out of battle fatique alone, and with the media coming to terms that if they want $$$ they have to tell more of the truth, maybe we will have a chance to win in 08. But in 04 DESPITE the media and despite the lies and the way they stole the election, Kerry won. AND when the final story is told on the 04 election, (probably after someone dies and a whistleblower is safe to come forward), the history books will write about how it was stolen and how democracy was taken away. (Um...if we still have a democracy by then.)

I don't know if there's a clip of it on Olberman's web site or youtube, but if there is, watch it. He sounds like a professor giving a lecture instead of a real person just talking to you.

He's NOT the only politician who does this either. I see it with Edwards sometimes, Hillary sometimes anthough she seems to be getting better.

I'm positive Al doesn't talk like that when he's just talking to his wife and kids, or friends at a party.

Maybe you don't think things like that are important, but I DO, and I know I'm not alone in the sea of voters. They want to look at that person on their TV screen and see a real person, one that they can feel is talking to THEM!

I would find it difficult to vote for Gore.

It seems to me that he is now just trying to be coy - trying to entice some begging from the Dems for him to run.

No doubt he is intelligent. He is dedicated to his "cause".

But he is sooooo stiff when trying to act presidential. And his attempt to be friendly and casual falls short of being endearing.

He still seems poll-driven to me - like the "kiss" - just trying too hard.

43. Gore/Obmama is my first choice ticket for 08.
They are the perfect compliment to each other- both are smart-- (bordering on brilliant), both excel in major areas (Gore has the experience Obama lacks), Obama has the charisma (and sizzle) that Gore (at times) lacks, both will appeal to various segments of the party, Greens, non-voters and independents, they are in agreement on Iraq and in alignment on every just about issue and --- I sincerely believe together with the help of the team these two will set up in their administration, they have the best chance of digging us out of the nightmare the Bush administration will be leaving them (and all of us) to clean up.

As a bonus, after 8 year of Gore-Obama, VP Obama can become President Obama without having to hear any more shit about his experience, his race, his record, etc.

Gore - Obama

Would be interesting for sentimental value but I don't think Kerry helps the ticket much. Gore/Clark would be the best ticket.

49. Sure-fire recipe for defeat.
Gore has done a lot to redeem himself since 2000. Kerry, on the other hand left a lot of people feeling burned after bungling an election against one of the most unpopular and vulnerable GOP incumbents in recent memory. (and please spare me the stuff about how we wuz robbed in Ohio - POS Bush won the popular vote by over 3 million votes. At least Gore won the popular vote, even by the GOP's count.)

I'd go for a Gore-Edwards ticket, but any ticket with Kerry on it will face insurmountable odds, IMO.

50. If Gore wins the nomination, he should pick OBAMA or CLINTON for #2
and the Democratic Party will still get the distinction of being the first party with a black or female Vice President. It's important that we break down some of these barriers to women and minorities.

It also sets up Obama or Clinton for a serious run at the presidency after Gore is done (with two Gore terms, I hope).

51. I wouldn't have a problem with any of those combinations...
Although I prefer choosing candidates on their merits, not color or gender, I do think Obama and Clinton have a lot of great points.

I'd be happy with any combination including Gore, Clark, Clinton, Edwards, Obama. It's Kerry I would steer clear of. I was mystified when he got the nomination in 2004, to be honest. What were they thinking?

55. half right. without being critical of Kerry, he has a similarly patrician, cool demeanor like Gore
better to get someone from the South, Midwest, or Southwest who is younger and a little more hot-blooded.

STOP FUCKING ASKING THIS?

This scenario is as UTTERLY DETACHED from plausibility as the non-sensical, "Hey, why don't we just run Ghouliani for president?" posts I still sometimes see show up here.

Each of these men RAN FOR and WON their respective races for the PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES. There is NO WAY either man would EVER be comfortably able to play second-fiddle to the other. EVER. STOP IT.

62. No, thank you.
I didn't want Kerry in '04, bitterly resented the vote I cast for him, and have not forgiven him for his swift capitulation.

I'm glad he's not in the running this time around.

72. Not going to happen unfortunately. Clearly, the best person for president
is not going to be in the 2008 race. There are many people who would make great presidents who aren't in the field. I agree with Al Gore in his new book, that we have a bad system. I watched the debate last night, and I just don't think it represents the best and brightest America could deliver. And the GOP field is much, much worse.

Sigh. These are the times we live in.

American Idol is our model for the presidential election these days.

77. People who won the nomination for President don't later run for VP
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 03:14 PM by RGBolen
neither Kerry, Gore, or Edwards are going to be someone's V-P candidate.

on edit: in the case of Edwards no one is going to run for V-P a second time unless they are running for re-election as V-P

82. Gore-Kerry for Co-President.
Because we'll need both Presidents to fix all of the things this illegally installed administration has screwed up.

Why not? Dick Cheney is President behind the scenes. Why not allow the 2 guys who had their elections stolen run as a co-equals....they strike me as public servants who want to use the Office of the Presidency to do good things for the American people, not for egotistical self-interest. They can divvy the duties as they see fit. For Constitutional purposes, flip a coin on who takes the oath and 2 years later, they can swap jobs.

83. GORE - OBAMA 2008
The candidate for VP in 2008 should be someone who is young enough to run for President in 2016 and serve through until January 2025. At the time of the 2020 election, John Kerry will be almost 77 years old.

Anyone who has been paying attention, knows that Gore is very critical of Democrats who supported the Bu$h-Cheney decision to invade Iraq back in 2003. That's not quite the same as criticizing everyone who voted to authorize the war back in 2002 - because maybe some wanted to "keep up the pressure" on Saddam and continue with the UN inspections.

On December 9, 2003, Al Gore endorsed Howard Dean for the 2004 race. Here is what Gore said about Dean:
"He was the only major candidate who made the correct judgment about the Iraq war. And he had the insight and the courage to say and do the right thing. And that's important, because those judgments, that basic common sense, is what you want in a president."
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0312/09/se.01.html

I think if Gore decides to enter the race and wins the nomination, he would be very likely to pick Barack Obama as his running mate.

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :patriot:

86. I think
taking the losers of the last two elections (and I don't wanna argue that Gore really won - the fact is, he lost in the electoral college) and putting them up as a team would be the height of stupidity.
