4. Definitely deserves it.
That would be awesome if he won. And then ran for President. He'd be unstoppable! I'm getting warm and fuzzy just thinking about it.

5. Even the poll wording is suspiciously snarky:
"Alarmist" is a favorite of the denial crowd.

7. Eh ... It'd be neat if Gore won and all, but...
when guys like this:

http://www.hdvnbtdt.org/article.php3?id_article=110

are also nominated for the prize, it's kinda hard to justify giving it to a politician who made a movie.

14. Ummm
Gore didn't just make a movie. He made a movie that could literally save the world as we know it.

And his reach and the effect of this movie is world wide, not confined just to one country and religion.

17. That's one way to look at it...
Another way would be that here's a guy who protested against a repressive regime and was tortured and imprisoned, much like many previous Peace Prize winners, including Nelson Mandela and Lech Walesa, for example.

And on the other hand, you've got a guy that made a movie. Saying that movie could save the world may be a teeny bit hyperbolic, don't you think? And saying its effect is worldwide -- and that Gore's reach is similarly global -- is also maybe a bit overwrought, particularly since the film hasn't yet been successful outside the Western world (and even, with a few exceptions such as Belgium, where the whole gov't saw the film, the English-speaking world).

I wouldn't completely discount that Gore's movie will have a long-term effect, but if the man's going to get a Peace Prize for his efforts, shouldn't he get it after those efforts have already been somewhat quantified?

Also, I'd like to add the caveat that I loved the film, think Gore's a great guy, and that global warming is a serious problem. I'm just wondering if, when all the nominations are said and done, he'll be the best pick for the prize. That's all.

16. He spearheaded a movement. The movie was only part of that.

18. If you're going to look at it that way...
why not give the award to Robert Watson or one of the other pioneering scientists of global climate change?

19. Nominate him, why doncha? You have a problem with Gore's role in this? Tough.
The whole world thinks differently. Besides, karmically, he's due.

20. I don't have a problem with Gore's role in educating the public about global warming.
Far from it. I like Gore, and I respect the movie. It was well done. I'm just questioning whether he should get the Nobel Peace Prize for it. Is that wrong?

Clearly, "the whole world" other than me can't be of one mind on this, and I don't see where karma enters into it. I'm just asking a legitimate question. That's all.

24. I don't know that the Nobel committee thinks on those lines
I mean, giving someone the Nobel Peace Prize as a middle finger to one of that person's political enemies (no matter how loathsome said enemy may be)? Seems a little beneath the dignity of the thing, no?
