O'Reilly, Colbert Both See Ratings Spike On "Showdown Day"
As predicted, both Bill O'Reilly and Stephen Colbert saw substantial boosts in their respective ratings as a result of last Thursday's heavily-hyped showdown. TVNewser reports that Colbert's presence gave O'Reilly a whopping 67% boost in viewers age 25-54 for the evening, with a 46% increase among total viewers (2,963,000 total viewers, up from a 4th quarter average of 2,029,000). Colbert, meanwhile, saw a 50% increase compared to fourth quarter averages, with 1,641,000 total viewers (a record high in the show's 15-month history, as both TVNewser and the New York Times note). Colbert beat O'Reilly in the 25-54 demographic, averaging 929,000, up 46% from the fourth quarter. Variety reports that 1.1 million of Colbert's viewers were adults 18-49, while about 650,000 of O'Reilly's viewers fell within that age bracket.

1. True enough -- I watched O'Reilly that night.
I loved when Colbert said that he (Steven) appealed to younger voters than O'Reilly, particularly those in their 50s and 60s.

2. Funny thing about that.
I know at least twenty 60+ who tape both TDS and Colbert. They can't live without them.

4. That's my experience, as well...
My dear old conservative mom will be 80 soon and loves Jon Stewart. And, despite O'Reilly's success with the 60+ set, she cannot stand him.

5. I hadn't watched O'R in a long time- funny that one story got turned around on him
I hadn't heard about this thing with the two border guards shooting a "drug runner" and how Duncan Hunter (RED FLAG!!) is promoting these two and wants Bush to pardon them.

O'REilly had on the prosecutor who very politely and with a quiet voice corrected this RW meme and ripped the whole thing to shreds. They shot an unarmed man in the back-everyone agrees on that. I laughed , that was just too perfectly ironic and funny.

O'REilly also was going on about this thing in Vermont. I had never heard of it and I finally figured out that it was about a judge giving a really light sentence to some child molesters. The thing that got me was that it was like Colbert's bit about bears (obviously more important though) in that this is a regular thing on "THE FACTOR" but you wouldn't know about it if you weren't a devoted watcher.

Colbert used the chance to have Bill's audience to completely rip the RW with his WORD segment

6. Same here
That was the first - and probably the last - time that I watched the O'Reilly Factor. I couldn't believe how he interrupted EVERY SINGLE PERSON he had on the show to talk about issues (with the exception of Stephen Colbert, and I was actually quite impressed that he let Colbert finish several sentences). :eyes: My mom, a former journalist, started out watching it with me, but got sick of O'Reilly's constant interruptions after about five minutes and decided to catch the video on "the internets" later.

And yeah, that "younger audience" thing cracked me up as well. :D Gotta love Stephen Colbert!

3. Now I'm extra thankful
to whoever got the O'Reilly segment on YouTube so quickly. It allowed me to watch it without helping to boost his ratings, and before seeing the Colbert segment live!

:applause:
