It's a chilling scenario. Top generals say that if a Democrat wins in November, they will oppose ending the Iraq war in 2009 just like they opposed gays in the military in 1993. Do we live in a democracy or a military dictatorship?

3. Thanks! Truly scary, that military commanders suddenly think
they have a say in CREATING policy. They only have a say in IMPLEMENTING the policies our civilian leaders set for them, and even then, they can be disregarded and overruled--other Presidents have had to relieve Generals of their command in the past when they started trying to create policy. This is one of the most frightening developments, to me, of the Iraq war--this "let the generals on the ground decide" bullshit.

4. Good lord, this is chilling. This may be the most frightening thing I've ever seen here.
The notion that the military leaders aren't going to get behind whatever policy the President chooses, by way of the voters, is nothing less than a coup. The Republicans have been pushing the idea that the military is a branch of the Republican party for years now. Whoever the next president is must end that mentality, and fire those tho espouse it.

6. As a former Army JAG . . .
I agree. The new President should sack any General who expresses open opposition to the withdrawal.

The new President should ALSO propose a law to OUTLAW standing private Armies, like Blackwater USA.

I fear those Brownshirts more than I fear the men and women in uniform.

5. It's high time to shake this military up. Ike warned us 50 yrs ago.

If the generals don't like it....can their asses. It's what the monkey has been doing with the Iraq invasion and occupation.

The people are behind the president. Let's see where this thing takes us. "The military complex" is exactly what we are controlled by today. Think about it. Our economy is based on "the military complex". Christ, it's all we export anymore.
