...but I don't think it's because of a barbaric nature, I believe it's the repeated glorification of war, particularly WWII, that we've been indoctrinated by since childhood. From history texts to television to the big screen, there's nothing more respected, revered, and honored than a war hero. In conjunction with this we've also been conditioned to believe that much of the world is a dangerous place that resents America and would like to take us down. Of course, they do deeply resent us now and with good reason.
We're a relatively young country, and when you take a look at our history it's not glorious, it's sad -- one war followed by the next. And it would seem that our Military Industrial Complex which Eisenhower warned us about wouldn't have it any other way.
We need widely seen movies, documentaries, and textbooks that show war for the insane, costly, immoral, barbaric, stupidity that it is if we're ever to break free of it. Dr Strangelove and Catch 22 both at least showed the insanity, if not the barbarity of war, but they're the exceptions, not the rule. The rule is to glorify it as something honorable and necessary that must be repeated periodically in order to preserve our freedoms. We're still doing this and as long as we continue, will likely also continue to get the same very predictable results -- perpetual war for perpetual peace.
