Today is the special election in Ohio’s 5th Congressional District, where union members are working hard to elect Robin Weirauch.

An outspoken supporter of good jobs, fair trade and the freedom to form unions, Weirauch is making a strong run to win in a district where voters have supported Republican candidates in recent years.

To help Weirauch win, northwest Ohio’s unions have launched a full-scale get-out-the-vote mobilization. More than 1,000 volunteers have participated in phone banks, door-to-door neighborhood walks and worksite leafleting. It’s these grassroots, member-to-member communications that helped elect working family-friendly candidates in 2006 and 2007—and will make the difference across the country in 2008.

In this video, she talks about how her campaign wouldn’t have been possible without the strong support of union voters. She notes that she helped put herself through college because of a factory job as a member of the Electrical Workers (IBEW) and says that if she’s elected, she’ll put the needs of working families first.

We know what’s at stake. We know it’s about jobs. We know it’s about health care. We know it’s about things like the Employee Free Choice Act—I’m very proud to have signed a pledge to work on that, and I’m very excited about being a member of Congress that can help get that passed.

This race has drawn national attention, and the Republicans’ cash-strapped congressional committee has dumped $428,000 in an attempt to help state Rep. Bob Latta hold onto a seat held by Republicans for decades. Weirauch’s energetic campaign, her strong support for working families and the efforts of union volunteers have turned this race into a dead heat.

On this cold day in northwestern Ohio, this race will come down to energy and turnout. For updates on the special election throughout the day, visit Buckeye State Blog, Ohio Daily Blog and Daily Kos.
