Al Gore receives his Nobel Prize: Challenges the U.S. and China
by Joe Sudbay (DC) · 12/10/2007 08:29:00 AM

Today, in Oslo, Al Gore received his Nobel Prize. CNN covered the speech live. Gore spoke of moral authority -- and he has moral authority. That could never, ever be said of George Bush.

UPDATED with video -- Gore issued a challenge to the United States and China on global warming

1. Disappointing.

The surest way to ensure that the greatest CO2 emitter, "his own country", finally do what is necessary would of been for him to get his name on the ballot and be elligible to be elected President.

Instead, he is willing to sit back and HOPE that the next President takes the issue as seriously as he does. If he isn't that worried, why should anyone else? :(

Disappointing.

2. I am disappointed that he is not running, too. I also have faith in him -
that is sufficient to believe that he has very good reasons for the choices he is making.

Right now he is off to Bali to demand that the heads of all of the major nations meet once every 3 months until a global climate change treaty is ratified -- I don't think this has ever happened in all of human history and it is exactly what must happen, immediately, if we are going to turn this situation around. During Bali, during all of the upcoming meetings, Gore will be working behind the scenes to get the best possible treaty. I believe that his reasoning for not running for President includes the fact that he/we cannot "waste" a year in the process of developing this global treaty and that his input is critical to getting the work done.

Gore is clearly worried and Gore is clearly working his ass off.

4. Gore's election wouldn't guarantee anything.
He still would have to work with Congress and its lobbyists. Despite recent evidence, the presidency is not a platform for dictatorship.

He is calling on our collective conscience. It's up to us to do something.
