On November 4, 2007, CODEPINK activists enacted a live waterboarding demonstration for Senator Feinstein as she entered CNN studios in Washington, D.C.

So, this is how we are repaid.

We need to get rid of her kind of Dems right after we oust the repubs.

Agree with the bravery of Code Pink. The country owes them a debt of gratitude.

17. A powerful protest, at first blush, but . . .
Don't get me wrong, I am in AWE of the tenacious members of Code Pink. I wish I were as brave as they are in speaking TRUTH to POWER.

But, I have a problem with torturing a person - even a willing volunteer - to protest the use of torture.

If that man was really being waterboarded, it was wrong to do it, because torture is always wrong - whether it is being used to interrogate a terror suspect, or to drive home a political point. If he was not really being waterboarded (if he was wearing nose plugs - which I hope is the case) his cries of agony might have been realistic, or they might just been very interesting, very distrubing, political theater. Who knows?

is being performed in service to the political issues! Code Pink matches the skills of th Rovian propaganda theater!
He may wind up with a wicked case of swimmers ear. They were pouring the water onto the side of his head, check the alignment of his nose!
Did you notice DIFI putting her arm around Medea's shoulders at first encounter, untill the theater became too disturbing to her.

Waterboarding... even with a willing volunteer, even if it's "managed" in such a way that no harm is done... is still wrong.

51. Many people have died from waterboarding.
Having been brought back from almost drowning in a boating accident, it is a horrific death and in the case of waterboarding a very prolonged agonizing and torturous death.

I think Code pink is trying to make fun of people who get tortured and desensitize people to torture so that more torture can happen while all the while waterboarding people themselves because they are evil!!!!!!

14. I used to live on Irving St. in S/F myself.
Feinstein probably won't listen on this one. Remember she made her fortune as a slumlord in San Francisco.

She's done some good things and some bad but won't usually buck the general trend. And she doesn't have any serious political fallout in response voting in favor of Mukasey.

It's a nice try Code Pink, but I predict that Di Fi won't listen.

Doesn't need to in order to keep her job.

41. My buddy was bumpd off a forum for
calling Di Fi an unflattering word. Happened a long time ago.

Feinstein always looked better when she was running against a shithead like Seymour or Wilson. Two republicans who are truly awful all the time.

And she's done some good things for CA. Helped pass the California desert protection Act of 1994. I was working with her then. Volunteer activist. Picked up the ball where Cranston left off.

California was more conservative back then. Feinstein looked better in the historical perspective. Boxer surprised me because much as I liked her I felt she was unelectable at that time (1992).

Today though Di Fi needs to retire. Find a solid Democrat moving up the ladder and replce her. Newsom's out. Forget about his affair with his co worker's wife. he doesn't have the gumption for a statewide battle. Too much of a rich kid "pretty boy" outside of S/F.

San Francisco is fairly conservative now. You wouldn't recognize it if you left there in 1999 and came back today. The rents are through the roof. One year (2002) i lived in my school bus RV on the streets of S/F. Was great! You couldn't do that now. They impound all vehicles the homeless sleep in and have signs posted everywhere to keep the million dollar two bedroom homes "safe" from those down on their luck.

Big money rules. Di Fi has plenty of that.

I can't believe code pink just tortured someone. It is bad enough that bush does it. What if a kid sees this video, he will now know how to torture where before he most likely didn't. Thanks code pink, I thought we were on the same side on this issue then you trivialize it by doing it yourself.

By turning waterboarding it into a publicity stunt, these people completely dilute their point - that it's torture.

47. This Was a Stupid Stunt
Edited on Mon Nov-05-07 09:21 PM by FreedomUnderground
Henri Alleg, an 86-year-old journalist was subjected to waterboarding by French troops during the war for Algerian independence, and says no civilized country should allow it. He describes his lungs being repeatedly partially filled with water and then being beaten on the chest to expel the water to allow for additional torture. This media stunt makes a mockery of the horror of the actual act.

There are no demonstrations that can accurately do justice to
this torture. These "demonstrations" mock the
severity of this despicable act. How about a
"demonstration" of having your fingernails pulled
out?

This administration gets away with murder. This is what we
have become. How any republican or democrat enabler can claim
any loyalty to freedom and justice is beyond comprehension. We
are now practicing what our enemies preach and do. We return
evil for evil. Disgusting!

33. Why the fake torture?
I also share the opinion that the mock torture was wrong - on so many levels.

If he was really being tortured, as some here seem to actually believe, it surely was not the same intensity of an actual waterboarding session. He most likely had nose plugs on and also was not subject to being taken to the point of near drowning, only the occasional splash. And also, and this goes for all of those media 'demonstrations', the 'victim' KNOWS that it is all an act. Part of the mechanism of real torture is that the victim is in a hopeless situation where he fears he could very well die at the hands of the torturers. This "terrorism" of not knowing if they are going to kill you is combined with the actual physical pain and shock.

So it is nowhere near the reality. But what will happen is that some riech wing blogger will use this clip as a demonstration, by Code Pink no less, how inane and non-threatening waterboarding is - that they could use it in a kind of harmless show-and-tell to make a political point.

60. I think the concern here is way out of proportion
The obvious intent of Codepink was to do just the opposite, to take the debate about waterboarding out of the abstract and put it in the flesh. This would be better facilitated by using CIA footage of real, nonconsenting, detainees being tortured, but of course its hard for any of us to facilitate that.

I thought this was a reasonable substitute, and I find the idea that this protest would have caused otherwise concerned individuals to scoff at torture absurd.

Diane Feinstein did scoff, but she is apparently above concern for petty issues like the treatment of peasants, and the fate of our republic.

65. Ive seen resistance to code pink before, but these arguments are weird
Usually its the freepy types attacking code pink and the arguments are more along the lines of "these lefty wackos are making the democratic party look bad".

If you follow the logic of "its never ok to inflict pain on a consenting adult" argument, then you end up opposing body modification (tattoo, piercing etc.) voluntary initiation rites and fasting, and optional surgery. If you follow the "seeing water boarding at a protest causes desensitization" argument then murder, rape and torture, should already not bother us due to the code pink dwarfing media saturation of all three.

These people don't seem freepy, but I honestly can't figure out where they are coming from.

Maybe thats unfairly harsh, but my thinking is that if you disapprove of dissent, and you are against democrats who differ substantially from the rightwing fascist viewpoint on anything, then what you really want is a singular fascist party with two distinct wings. You are simply working to attain it by appealing to appeal to reason, rather than being a fullblown freeper and posting stuff that is blatatntly xenophobic and authoritarian.

Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 01:51 AM by dmr
Google him, see what he has to say about what he felt when he was water-boarded under a controlled environment.

Of course, to quote you, it's "not the same intensity of an actual waterboarding session."

THAT is exactly the POINT! It is actually torture, and if Bush*, DiFi, Gonzales, Schumer, Bush* Cheney and countless other psychopaths weren't so damn cold-hearted, there wouldn't even be a need for Levin or Code Pink do these demonstrations.

Edited to fix grammar

I'm convinced some of these politicians have joined into a secret mutual agreement/pact. They won't go against each other no matter what.

38. This has to be one of the smartest damn things I've seen lately.

Yet so simple. Just do a demonstration. Who woulda' thunk it? Simply do the demo and let people decide for themselves whether it is torture.
The next time someone tries to say it isn't torture people will remember that visual.

Brilliant!

Hmmmm, what other things the Repuggies like to confuse us with could we do a vid on?

40. Ignore(ance) is not only bliss but a defense...
If you ignore something long enough it will go away, right? That belief is applied to issues of the day, protesters, progressives, whatever... They have learned that ignore(ance) is not only bliss but a defense.

58. Fucking love these heros to death.
They are doing exactly what I feel like doing.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Code Pink.
The blood on Condoleeza's hand was great as well. You have been doing an incalculable service.
Thank you, you are soldiers of love.

Joey,
LA area

70. I sent her a two-sentence e-mail today.
This is all it said:

"I'm disgusted by you. With Democrats like you, who needs Republicans?"

She's unreachable. In fact, I feel it's a complete waste of time to contact most politicians.
