7. Great Interview...
Not to be missed. I am actually quite amazed at how researched this guy is. You can tell he has really done his homework. After seeing him in several interviews, I had a paradigm shift in thinking. Initially I suspected, as many others did, that our primary purpose for going into Iraq was an underlying preoccupation by Bush and his cronies to secure one of the largest oil reserves in the world. After hearing Scahill, I think the answer is actually far more ominous. Through companies like Blackwater and Halliburton, the right has successfully succeeded in channeling hundreds of billions of dollars into corporations who are essentially becoming parallel military and intelligence units, with very obvious and troubling connections to the religious right. What we have seen, is a far right militia and corporate war machine built right under our noses with taxpayer dollars. Despite the fact that our actual military has declined in numbers over the last 20 years, funding continues to grow. No one is asking questions. Meanwhile, we only hear about companies such as this after they have successfully extracted hundreds of billions of dollars from military and intelligence coffers and are more or less permanently embedded in the military fabric.

There is simply no excuse for subcontracting out our military and intelligence to privately held companies, even those without obvious ties to partisan politics and fringe religious fanaticism. Not ever. I wish this was bigger news.

12. I haven't the foggiest
Maybe I should re-watch it. I thought they were talking about the Middle East, and then this whole tamale thing got interjected.

11. Chilling
The parallels to the SS are getting scary here. They too were devised as the private military wing of the ruling party, with allegiance and ideological/racial purity being the essenial prerequisites for membership. They too were better paid and better funded (per capita) than the German regualr army, the Wemacht. They too developed a reputation for cold brutality and lack of concern about the laws of war. They too came to be hated and distrusted by the Wermacht in the end.
