Sarah Seltzer, Alternet joins Thom Hartmann. Have you noticed the bevy of playboy bunnies and sexy stewardesses occupying TV's new Fall lineup? There's an interesting theme common to several of these new shows - they glorify a time in our recent past when women were "in their place" and men ran things - without doing the relatively nuanced job that the creator of the genre, Mad Men, did of showing what a toll this took on women in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s before the women's movement had really taken hold and gotten power. From re-hashing "Charlie's Angels" - to a show about Playboy bunnies - to a show about sexy stewardess at Pan Am - the fall line-up is imagining an America that really never was - and seems, frankly, somewhat misogynist. So why is that?

1. The T&A jiggle shows are always trotted out

when the economy goes into the dumper. In the 70s it was "Three's Company" and "Charlie's Angels." In the late 80s it was "Baywatch." I guess they think if they keep males on the couch, tongues hanging out and fingering their willies, they'll forestall civil unrest. It's worked on the prior two occasions. Whether or not it will work now is anyone's guess, we haven't been this desperate since the 30s.

2. For those that don't read and or aspire to progress, we always have

derogatory images of women to make those knuckle draggers feel good about themselves... TPTB find this nostalgic recipe profitable....
