Yet another one in a white shirt over-reacting and assaulting someone with force who only is speaking to him.

they hate having people take photos of their assaults!

join to have power. Others want to serve the public.

I have met both.

I hope this gets the attention of the NYPD and the cop gets suspended.

Peace,

Too bad that kid wasn't a 250 pound full back college football player.
That would have changed the outcome of that encounter considerably.
That cop knew how to pick his "target".

12. Disgusting! I hope the city will be hit with hundreds of lawsuits
over this. Shame on them. These PUBLIC SERVANTS have forgotten who they work for. They view the public as the enemy. That needs to be on the list of things to be changed also. The Civilian police force is paid for by the people and it's way past time that the people get back in control of them.

That was a criminal assault, no question about it. He should be suspended without pay and then prosecuted for assault on a citizen.

13. 24-40%+ of cops engage in domestic violence
Edited on Sun Sep-25-11 08:53 PM by Juche
http://womenandpolicing.com/violenceFS.asp

Two studies have found that at least 40% of police officer families experience domestic violence, (1, 2) in contrast to 10% of families in the general population.(3) A third study of older and more experienced officers found a rate of 24% (4), indicating that domestic violence is 2-4 times more common among police families than American families in general. A police department that has domestic violence offenders among its ranks will not effectively serve and protect victims in the community.5, 6, 7, 8 Moreover, when officers know of domestic violence committed by their colleagues and seek to protect them by covering it up, they expose the department to civil liability.7

I point that out because it always irritates me when cops have that 'holier than thou, my shit doesn't stink' attitude, at the end of the day police forces are sadly full of thugs who like to use violence and bullying against people who aren't fighting back. Knowing a lot of cops can't leave the violence on the job makes me feel better for some reason, it makes me not fear or respect them as much. When you realize up to half of cops abuse their spouses and kids you stop fearing their authority and are more willing to stand up to them and hold them accountable for their job behavior. At least I do.

Demilitarize the police, we need professional civil servants. I've met some good cops, and I've met some raging scumbags. It can be a crapshoot.

24. I was thinking the same thing...
And if the kicker was prosecuted and I was a member of a jury, I would say it was a justifiable kick, and make the police pay for cleaning the kickers boots.

The time is coming.

21. Wannabe cops go through a process of character screening before getting a badge...
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 09:22 AM by Larry Ogg
Police recruiters look for thugs that aren't too smart, have little or no conscience, can follow the orders of superior thugs, and are prone to violence but have avoided being prosecuted for criminal behavior. Someone who joined the military to avoid prison would be a perfect candidate for many police forces throughout the country.

America has surpassed the point of putting the fox in-charge of guarding the hen-house, we are now the taxpaying sheep that pay wolves to guard the house of wolves, while they eat sheep for dinner. And with mustered too...

Of course, all things being connected, my guess is that this is one of the many consequences of putting the people who destroyed the economy in-charge of the economy. Go figure!

It's amazing how fucking backwards American justice has become, but then, this is what happens when psychopaths rise to the top of the food chain.

27. I know the cops are already on the side of gun control
but another good consequence of de-militarizing them would be they'd make damned sure no one else was allowed to carry a handgun, if they weren't.

Of course, riot police in Britain aren't much better than here, so not much would be gained on that front.

22. Abuse of Power
I was arrested once for talking to a police officer too. He charged me with disorderly conduct for talking with him. There had been a fight (I wasn't involved in the fight) and he was just angry because someone had punched him and he took it out on me. I took it to a jury trial and was found not guilty. He actually lied on the stand (I was raised to believe that the police are there to help you). When he lied it was a rude awakening for a 21 year old to find out that not all police officers are honest. It was a scary experience because if I had been found guilty I would have been locked up. Despite that I couldn't just pay a fine for something that I didn't do. It was just wrong on principle. After the trial I made a complaint to the police department and they advised me not to file a formal complaint because I would be harassed by him and his friends (picked up for traffic violations right and left, etc.). I kid you not, they actually told me that. Talk about having your faith in the police shattered. I'm sorry to say that I didn't file the formal charges because I was scared. Looking back on it, it's my one regret that I didn't file the formal complaint. If it happened today there is no doubt in my mind that I would file the complaint.

23. extra comment
One more thing. Not all police officers are bad but the good officers need to stop protecting the bad ones. The bad ones need to be weeded out by their fellow officers and yes by citizens like me who are unfairly treated by them. If they don't then they have no room to complain when people paint all officers with a broad brush and lose respect for all of them because of the few who should never have a badge.

25. When police violence and corruption becomes all to common...
Rest assured, the corruption can be followed all the way up the chain of command, and too the societies political hierarchy.

There comes a time when bad cops just don't happen; their recruited.

See post 21 up-thread.

just flashed forward 5-15 years - now serving as New York's "finest" - and if that is the "finest" that city has to offer for its public face, well....

Hopefully the video will help the young man's complaints and lawsuit against the city for wrongful arrest and detainer.

32. The mask comes off.
The police have never been to protect and serve the people but were instituted to control the working class. The invention of the modern police department happened at a time when crime rates were actually declining. At the same time working class "crimes" such as public intoxication and disorderly conduct were made illegal. There is a reason that fascists revere the police and military. If the propaganda fails they have two lines of back up.
Before any liberals get their underwear twisted I must add that I have known many police officers who were very decent people, and the average everyday run of police calls is less than thrilling, but in the end their ultimate job is to protect the propertied interests.
I am also sure that Bloomberg is going nuts trying to finger the "leaders" in order to stop the demonstration. They really don't know how to deal with horizontal organization because all they know is authoritarian structures.
