Morgan Freeman laid down the chips on the Tea Party in a new interview with Piers Morgan that is due to air Friday night.

The Oscar-winning actor sat down with the British TV host and, amongst other things, discussed his belief that the right wing Tea Party's anti-Obama stance is rooted in racism.

When asked by Morgan whether Obama's presidency has made racism in the United States better or worse, Freeman, who once played apartheid-defying South African president Nelson Mandela, frankly stated that his time in office has made it worse, as he has become a target of the right's aggression.

"Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term," the actor said. "What's, what does that, what underlines that? 'Screw the country. We're going to whatever we do to get this black man, we can, we're going to do whatever we can to get this black man outta here.'"

Declaring once again that "it's a racist thing," Freeman said the group's rise has shown the hate still lingering in America.

"Well, it just shows the weak, dark, underside of America," he said. "We're supposed to be better than that. We really are. That's, that's why all those people were in tears when Obama was elected president. "Ah, look at what we are. Look at how, this is America." You know? And then it just sort of started turning because these people surfaced like stirring up muddy water."

The actor continued, saying that he understood President Obama not fighting back, seeking to stick to his principles, but wishes that he'd be more aggressive now.

Freeman endorsed Obama during his run for the presidency, but declined to campaign with him, saying that he was an actor, not a politician. He attended a White House Civil Rights concert in 2010.

1. Many Americans carry strong underlying racist attitudes that often are hidden..
Edited on Sat Sep-24-11 07:20 AM by DCBob
until some big event brings it out like Obama becoming President. I am beginning to come to the realization that much of America was simply not ready for a black man with a scary muslim name to be sitting in the WH.

3. are you trying to tell me
that Americans would stil be complaining if we had 6% unemployment, balanced budgets and less wars? Say what you will about the Clintons but he provided us with all those 3 items listed as opposed to Obama.

Its his policy and not his race. We got to quit using the race card everytime someone comes out against Obama.

4. Racist Americans would find something else to complain about if the economy was doing better.
gay rights, abortion, gun control.. just to name a few.

6. If it was his policy, then McConnell and the rest of them
Edited on Sat Sep-24-11 09:43 AM by SemperEadem
would be participating in bi-partisan solutions. They would not have made a declaration within the first six months--before ANY policy was enacted--that their objective was to make him a one term president. They all took their marching orders from limpballs, who said he wanted the president to fail. Anyone in that party who stood up against that declaration/order, within days, was grovelling to him, hat in hand, eyes cast downward, apologizing for straying from the party message. This was all in the first 6 months of the man's term.

It IS race and the sooner you quit trying to deflect people's attention from that just because you're too squeamish to "open the casket lid" on this and examine it, the better off everything will be.

9. And Newt Gingrich
also wanted to do the same to Clinton. Its easy to explain McConnel's hatred of Obama and thats because he is a partisan just like most politicians. He is only looking after the best interest of his party and not the country so hatred of everything Obama is natural. This is the reason why democrats uniformly voted againsted raising the debt ceiling in 2006 and did the opposite in 2011.

Now to the tea party, you have to admit that if Obama suddenly adopted all the policy stance of someone like Allan West or Herman Cain, the tea baggers would start to like him. Yes, there is a racism (tea party rally posters) in the mix, but the bulk of the discontent lies with the economy and his non rightwing policies. This is why I believe Morgan Freeman is wrong in his assesment of the political situation.

10. Excuse me but you miss the facts.........
The TEA party stands for "taxed enough already".........Taxes are the lowest in fifty years!
The deficit they blame on Obama is caused by GW Bush's Tax cuts for the rich and wars in Afghanistan, and Iraq, not spending.
Although the evidence is un-indictable, they still claim that Obama was born in Kenya, he's a Muslim, Marxist, Maoist, Fascist, Socialist, etc.
Obama is the first President of the United States to heckled during the SOTU address.

So...given the facts that the Teabaggers claims are all made up lies, It's obvious to everyone that Obama's policies are not the root issue with their hatred and disrespect for him so, what else can it be besides racism?....You tell me!

8. I am a real fan of Morgan Freeman.
It breaks my heart to hear this genuine deep emotional hurt in his voice.

Apparently some people, mostly Republicans and Teabaggers, draw the line at having a black man as president. They simply will not tolerate it. They would welcome a second great depression rather than have Obama reelected.

I am no longer an Obama fan, as I once was. But these racists should be held to account. Not a single one should be returned to office. I understand that this will not happen but in a perfect world it would be so.
