Students plan another protest march in Hershey
By CHRIS SHOLLY
Staff Writer Lebanon Daily News Newspaper

Updated: 09/21/2011 06:11:56 PM EDT

...The situation began Aug. 17 when more than 200 foreign college students who had temporary jobs packaging Hershey candy for the summer protested their working conditions. After conducting a sit-in that halted production at warehouse in North Londonderry Township, they protested on Chocolate Avenue in front of The Hershey Story museum.

The students, who paid between $3,000 and $6,000 to come to the United States for the opportunity to immerse themselves in American culture by working in a job for three months, claimed their jobs barely covered their rent and left little money or time to enjoy the American experience.

The U.S. State Department is investigating the students' allegations against the sponsoring organization - the Council for Educational Travel USA. The department has not yet released its findings.

Three other federal agencies also have launched investigations into the students' complaints.

According to the NGA, nearly 70,000 Americans signed a petition in support of the students' demands:

1) to refund the money the students paid to come here; and

2) to turn the 400 jobs they filled in the packing plant - operated not by Hershey but by a contractor - into living-wage jobs for local workers.

1. Looks like they got a great taste of what it's like to be an American worker.
Being an American means working until you drop for next to no money! YAY!

2. Milton Hershey is rolling in his grave
That this situation occurred is completely out of phase with Mr Hershey's goals in founding Hershey's Chocolate.

"living wage" - that last sentence sounds like what Hershey didn't want to do, and instead of shipping even more jobs to Mexico, they flew in people from other countries to work here to "immerse" themselves in American culture and learn the language... nice. Typical corporate diversion to pay people lower salaries!

I'm sure all the big corps do this, I know the Mouse does in FL, and I'm sure there's dozens more!

7. I stopped buying most of Hershey Candy - The regular chocolate bars are still made in PA.
They have a new chocolate bar out called Air Delight that is made in Mexico as well as their York Peppermint Patties. I swear I can tell the difference and do NOT buy any candy that is not made in the USA for both safety and labor reasons. I always look for the Made in USA label on any candy or cookies I buy. Brach's candy also has moved their manufacturing to Mexico!
