The presidential candidacies of Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann have already proved one thing about the 2012 election – the religious right is going to once again play a massive role in electing Republicans. Both Perry and Bachmann have developed their worldviews based on the Re-Constructionist movement within the religious right, a movement that believes in a strict, literal interpretation of the Bible. Mike Papantonio talks about how dangerous the religious right will be in 2012 with Frank Schaeffer, author of the new book “Sex, Mom, and God: How the Bible's Strange Take on Sex Led to Crazy Politics--and How I Learned to Love Women (and Jesus) Anyway.”

2. STFU Frank
You're the guest, let the host ask the questions and run the interview. You'll get plenty of book plugs in (as you always do). If there is anything that has carried over from his fundie days, it is the need to beat people over the head until they are singing in unison.

3. I disagree...
...first, Mike Papantonio has no problem standing up for himself and I've seen him talk all over people after he just asked them a question (don't get me wrong, I nearly always agree with him and always enjoy watching him, but he does love the sound of his own voice). Second, like anyone with a well-thought-out position, Frank needs to express his ideas in sentences and occasionally paragraphs. Third, sure he's hawking his book. But did you disagree with his assessment of the batshit crazy Republican Presidential candidates and what it means in the big picture? I sincerely hope not, because he knows and understands this movement like few other people do.

Anyway, Papantonio invited him on the show so we could hear what he had to say, not so he would STFU.

4. I find him kind of annoying
In the same way that ex-smokers can be the most vociferous enforcers of no smoking rules. Or ex-alcoholics who demand temperance from everyone they meet.

I'm also a little annoyed that, like Paul Craig Roberts, after spending a good chunk of their lives promoting a deranged way of thought, now all they do is write books with the themes "those people are crazy!" Yeah, we knew that. Now what insights do you have that will rot the movement from the inside? Neither he nor Roberts bring along any converts with them, nor do they have any way to deprogram the right wing.

To their former colleagues, they are merely souls who have lost the way and are not worth worrying about anymore. I'd like it better if they could peel off huge chunks of those followers and turn them.

11. I'll put up with a bit of 'annoying'
if people will open their eyes and listen to what he is saying. This is a crisis.

12. Frank is saying what democratic leadership should be saying, but...
democratic leadership is licking boots of Wall Street, too. No one dares attack Wall Street for the posse of criminals they have become. Even our Attorney General (*) quivers and shakes, drops to his knees in a fusillade of sweat and tears, and begs for mercy at the mere mention of Goldman Sachs.

Neither party governs in the best interests of the nation.

Until we purge all the "me first" Wall Street DLC type corporate douche bags like Tim Geithner out of the business of public policy, democrats will get the economic malaise that they deserve.

(*) what's his name? I can't recall. It's possible that this is still an unfilled cabinet post. If so, I might have mixed up the quivering and crying out in fear with head of SEC. Hmmm, head of SEC, what's their name? Dang - they really hide from the public they are entrusted to represent.

Aha! Found them. I just had to google:

"useless government agents on their knees servicing Wall Street CEOs while taking our tax dollars and lining their own pockets."

13. K +R This is a very insightful, historically accurate, and I praise both of
these guys, and their fine discussion of this topic.

This is exactly what Americans need to learn, and so few people who are Democrats even understand the dynamics going on here.

Excellent! Thanks for posting this!
