Mike Papantonio appears on The Ed Show alongside investigative journalist Brad Friedman to discuss the Koch Brother’s secret millionaire meeting from earlier this year, and why the billionaire brothers are praying that Rick Perry wins the presidency in 2012.

1. Absolutely
I really dislike this Perry guy
The things he says first of all if they are positive aren't parallel to his history and the negatives just makes no sense

The guy is a fake and a complete idiot
He's also hand-picked by the establishment

3. The Koch brothers are idiots
They have been around for years so why do they just now suddenly make themselves known?

That puzzles me?

Maybe they are close to dying of old age and want to mess up American politics as much as they can?!

6. Why now?
I think that it's more that they've been "outed," and so have decided to run with it.

9. They've been around -- just worked really hard to stay invisible

All indications are that the Koch brothers have been messing up American politics for a very long time -- but they were masters of using front groups behind other front groups to conceal their participation. Some of this came out when the Senate investigated the role of Triad Management in the 1996 elections, but that was the only time until recently that their name surfaced at all -- and then the GOP managed to head off any deeper scrutiny.

So the real question is why they've been outed in just the last few years. I suspect that with the rise of the Tea Party and Citizens United, they felt they no longer had to hide their hand. But there may be more to it than that.

David H. Koch ran for president on the Libertarian Party ticket in 1980. Author Thomas Frank wrote in "What's the Matter with Kansas?" that "Koch money flowed through Triad Management Services", an advisory service to conservative donors groups and candidates, for the 1996 Senate campaign of Sam Brownback.

The founder of the Center for Public Integrity, Charles Lewis, told the New Yorker: “The Kochs are on a whole different level. There’s no one else who has spent this much money. The sheer dimension of it is what sets them apart. They have a pattern of lawbreaking, political manipulation, and obfuscation. I’ve been in Washington since Watergate, and I’ve never seen anything like it. They are the Standard Oil of our times.”

Charles and David Koch have poured more than a hundred million dollars into dozens of seemingly independent organizations. Tax records indicate that in 2008 the three main Koch family foundations gave money to thirty-four political and policy organizations, three of which they founded, and several of which they direct. These include the Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation, the Mercatus Center, the Citizens for a Sound Economy, & the spinoff group, Citizens for the Environment, and the Americans for Prosperity.

A trust called Triad Management spent more than three million dollars on attack ads in twenty-six House races and three Senate races recently, and the New Yorker reports that more than half of the advertising money came from an obscure nonprofit group, the Economic Education Trust. A Senate committee minority report found that “the trust was financed in whole or in part by Charles and David Koch of Wichita, Kansas.” Triad Management’s funds “may have played a decisive role in four of six federal races,” says the New Yorker.

Okay, so you have Triad, which is a for-profit organization, whose purpose is to influence elections, and it has two arms that are shells, in a sense, that are its airwings, its air force. It runs television ads against candidates, right?

Right.

It gets its money from something called the --

The Economic Education Trust. It went out, we think and hired political consultants, planned an issue ad campaign in key districts that were important to whoever was running the trust, and spent between $1 and $3 million dollars doing that.

And what was its relationship to Triad?

As near as we can tell, the Economic Education Trust basically shopped for organizations to run money through in an effort to keep its existence hidden. So its relationship to Triad is essentially -- it went shopping for organizations, and Triad was one that it found.

And who gives that money to the Economic Education Trust?

What the report says and what the evidence the committee developed suggests is that the Economic Education Trust is funded by Koch Oil, which is possibly the second largest privately held company in the country.

11. And some of this was pointed out here at DU in 2004
Edited on Thu Sep-08-11 11:18 AM by starroute
I did a quick google and found a few threads from that wildly hectic period immediately following the 2004 election:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2768979

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x206876

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x208424#208710

It looks like there was some (deliberate?) confusion between Triad Management and an unrelated voting machine firm called Triad Governmental Systems. And since the focus here in 2004 was trying to find evidence that the 2004 election had been stolen, when it became clear that there was no relationship between the two Triads, interest in Triad Management and the Koch brothers kind of drained away.

But the information was definitely out there.

There might be good reason to dredge up the Triad Management question, by the way. Haley Barbour was intimately involved with Triad, since he was chairing the RNC at that time. And lawyer Ben Ginsberg, whose name surfaces in almost every sleazy Republican election scam, was also part of things. At the second of those threads I linked above, someone quotes this:
Koch Industries has refused to say whether it funded the Triad-controlled tax-exempts or any other organizations that ran attack ads in 1996. A September 30, 1997, letter to Koch Industries Chairman Charles Koch from the Committee's Minority Chief Counsel, produced no response. Questions from journalists have been met with ''no comment.'' After the Minority learned of the existence of the Economic Education Trust, Senator Glenn, the ranking Minority member, asked Chairman Thompson to issue a subpoena to the Riggs National Bank of Washington, D.C., where the Trust maintained the account from which money was wired to the Triad organizations....

Other evidence besides the involvement of the same consultants suggests that the donor behind the Economic Education Trust whose identity has been concealed from the Committee funded not only the Triad advertising campaign but also the CCF advertising campaign. In addition: Both Triad and CCF representatives confirmed that both organizations executed written confidentiality agreements with a secret contributor. An unnamed former employee of CCF stated in a news article that the entity that funded the CCF advertising campaign was a trust. The funds for the CCF ad campaign were wired from an account at Riggs Bank in Washington, D.C., the same bank where the Economic Education Trust has an account. Barry Bennett, executive director of CCF stated that the confidentiality agreement was drafted by former RNC General Counsel Benjamin Ginsberg. Ginsberg was also consulted on the substance of CCF advertising, and represents both Dick Dresner and James Farwell, both of whom failed to appear for deposition on any of the numerous dates offered to them.

How much more money could these guys possibly need? And why do they begrudge the lower ninety percent of us a modest share of the pie?
