I lived for many, many years in hurricane country. We would go all "Californian earthquake snark" on anything less than 75mph sustained and/or over 925mb of pressure.

For them to take this storm seriously, I pay attention!

That was funny. My housemate Red watches Fox News, who seem to be welcoming Irene like some sort of holiday... It's all they are talking about. They ran footage of the boardwalk in Atlantic Beach, NC that looked almost as bad as what happens at the Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego EVERY FRIGGIN' JANUARY!

Must be nice to get a break, however brief, from finding entertaining ways to make the GOP look like This Nat-ion's Saving Grace. That job must be harder than tiptoeing through a minefield.

5. As a south Floridian for ten years, I was disappointed they didn't mention the CC power generation

In other words, the winds of a hurricane move in a counter clockwise motion. Since this storm is hugging the coast it will maintain decent strength (at least 75 MPH center wind strength) all the way from southern North Carolina until it slams into Long Island. Why? Because the winds on the southern end will be moving to the east, heading over open water gaining strength, and then bulldozing back into the coast ahead of the storm. This really is an unusual storm. Usually they go into land, break apart, and dump a bunch of water. This one will sustain itself for nearly a thousand miles, sustain its wind, and dump MORE water than a normal storm.
