Neighbourhood watch groups are patrolling the streets and Tripoli's citizens are starting to tell their stories of fear and intimidation by Colonel Gadaffi's security forces.

This report by Lindsey Hilsum was from the Aug. 25 editions of Channel 4 News in the UK and PBS NewsHour in the US (at the 3 minute mark here.)

1. K&R and worth watching...
This disturbing report by Channel 4's International Editor Lindsey Hilsum includes reports of three civilians who were beaten, then shot in the head and left to die on the sreet after they approached a government checkpoint carrying the rebel flag.

At another Gaddafi stronghold, the sports center next door where Gaddafi supporters would gather, Hilsum finds a "patch of blood on the ground and and a terrible smell," and hears reports of a refrigerated truck found there with bodies inside.

And a local resident of the district, Munir El Goula, tells of being held prisoner and watching in horror as mercenaries killed at least 20 soldiers and more than 100 prisoners in their cells with gunfire and grenades. Munir managed to escape with his brother, and he can barely manage to tell the story through his tears.

"What happened here," Hilsum says, "will never be forgotten."

3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the men interviewed in their home
were held by rebels and witnessed rebels killing gaddafi soldiers in their cells? The same men were released by Gaddafi soldiers?

4. The prisoners were killed by Gaddafi regime mercenaries, not the rebels
The man interviewed (Munir), and his brother, are ID'd as "former regime detainees" who were arrested and interrogated for 3 days by soldiers.

The story does not explain why regime mercenaries killed regime soldiers as well as the prisoners. But the soldiers are described as having been "pushed back into the jail" by the mercs when the mercs entered the compound though the gate.

In using Hilsum's report and posting the transcript, PBS appears to have attempted to reduce the confusion by prefacing Munir's interview with, "MUNIR EL GOULA, TORTURED BY GADHAFI'S FORCES" (caps in original).
