President Obama said that he cannot guarantee that social security checks will go out on August 3. Watch more of the interview tonight on the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.

1. Perhaps we should attach a terror color coding to the deficit talks...
If so, this would definitely rate a red.

2. And there it is. If that doesn't drive the point home, I don't know what
will. Now, I don't think for a minute that checks won't go out, and Social Security now pays recipients at other times during the month. For example, I get mine on the fourth Wednesday of every month, and it's a direct deposit, so there's no check involved. But, simply put, if the US government defaults, as many Republicans (and some DUers) hope, then this will eventually happen - no payments.

3. I can't imagine the fury that will be unleashed if the checks aren't in the mail 8/03.
It shouldn't be on the table period. imho

5. I am worried
because SS is mainly what we live on, a small pension but that's it. Can you imagine those that are in the same boat won't be paying bills or trying to borrow from family, which is not fair, or totally destroying our credit.

17. My wife and I are in the same boat
We have no bills except for the utilities and mortage! Plans are we will not pay nor buy anything till these arseholes figure it out. Multiply this decision by 54+ million people who receive SS, that will represent a staggering problem for America's economy. They are bluffing!

15. I can. I was there.
Back in the 80's. A MAJOR IT company was under contract to re-do parts of the SSA's code and computers. Been too long for me to recall all the details but they ROYALLY screwed up and had to tell the administrator that, for the first time - EVAR!!! - they were going to miss a payroll.

Unbelievable hell broke out. They took pride in NEVER missing a payroll and now, after 50-years, they were about to. IMMEDIATE calls to HHS Secretary, Treasury Secretary, the White House, and every member of Congress whose phones were soon going to be ringing with angry constituents. Every elected person was pissed and scared.

In a meeting with some of the governments IT people (gov't employees) you could see their anger. Just seething. "Going Postal" could easily have been "Going Social".

This is a group with long-time employees, some of them family members, and all of them with long memories. Told me that that major IT company would never get another contract from the SSA. Ever. EVER! And they haven't. And they won't.

4. Pure fear mongering....
How about we cant afford to refuel all these naval vessels and jets for our 3 wars?

I'm fine not raising the debt ceiling. End the wars, end the TSA, end Homeland Security, end the DEA, and bulldoze K-Street. We'll have plenty left for SSI and Medicare.

All the money we're borrowing is only ending up with the bankers and war contractors.

10. There is a reason he says this, SS funds right now are Treasury Bonds
They can't cash in the bonds if they can't borrow the money.

12. Are they going to just stop paying the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq?
Can't wait until Congress doesn't get their checks. How about the White House cook? Is Michelle going to fill in in the kitchen for the next state dinner?

Get real. There are lots of ways to cut costs without going into the Social Security trust fund.

And besides, look at Obama. He is laughing as he says this. Either he is a sadist (which I don't believe) or he does not believe for a minute what he is saying.

The dastardly deal has been made. Obama has done in the seniors and he is laughing about it. There isn't going to be any default. The look on his face says he is quite happy to be playing this big joke on Americans.

13. Ever watch the TV series "Lie to Me?"
When someone talks about a real, potentially devastating crisis situation, his face will show emotions of dread and somberness. From Obama's face, one can tell that he feels the situation is neither dreadful, somber or in any way a cause for real alarm. His expression is one of gleeful superiority. Against whom? Those of us who dare to question his actions?

14. Precisely. He does not lie well. Maybe that is why he is such
a lousy negotiator.

16. How could he be a good negotiator, if
in his heart he does not represent the constituency he claims to represent?

he doesn't want to be a two term president. That's one sure fire way to guarantee it.
