Former VP and environmental activist Al Gore had harsh criticism of President Obama's lack of leadership and action on global warming in the latest Rolling Stone magazine. The Young Turks/MSNBC host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

1. Economy trumps ecology
EVERYTHING Obama does has to be about the economy and jobs. It's too bad. I wonder what kind of a President he could have been if he had been elected in an environment like 2004....

Obama tried to do one major thing not directly related to jobs and the economy- healthcare reform. And it blew up in his face. If he started to give speeches tomorrow about climate change, people would start asking why he isn't focused on the economy. The best he can do is allude to it and talk about energy sector/"green" jobs.

So yes, the main point of Al Gore is correct. It just completely disregards the rest of what's going on in the world.

6. Obama doesn't get a pass on this because of the economy
Obama is ineffective president. He lacks a spine. He does what the republicans and the corporations tell him to do. What kind of president would Obama have been if elected in 2004? Exactly the kind he is now. A president who will not make a stand on anything.

4. I know it is not about "rec's."
It is just very telling when you "rec" something (a major Progressive issue) and the end number stays at zero. A Progressive would not have "unrec'ed" this post.

5. K&R!
Well done, Cenk. Obama has been the same on every issue. He will also sign a bill that includes medicare cuts. Mark my words. Of course we will hear, <whiny voice> "Oh, Obama had to do it because the Republicans forced him." Just like on extending the Bush tax cuts -replay.

7. Thank you Cenk for distilling the policy essence of the article
and avoiding the noise of how the MSM is using this to divide the Democrats.

Gore and Cenk are correct in pointing out Obama's performance on the environment was a disappointment that endangers the planet. What is equally disappointing is that none of the pollsters include global warming and climate change or environmental issues as categories or options to measure Obama's job performance. While the economy and foreign policy are critical - environmental issues are equally formidable and at least as critical to fixing the economy - in fact addressing environmental problems is an opportunity to fix the economy. Obama has the wrong priorities from investments in offshore drilling to nuclear power and misses opportunities to invest in clean fuel economies that will help the recovery as well as improve air quality. Foreign policy-wise Coppenhagen was also a failure to show world as well as national leadership.

Although I see gender equality, women's rights as important issues - they can also divide the left...The most critical issues of our time are peace, social justice and the environment....All else is fluff and a distraction.
