Talisman Energy a company that specializes in Fracking - blowing toxic chemicals underground to extract natural gas - launched a new campaign to make what they do more appealing to children. It's a coloring book for kids starring Talisman Terry - a “Friendly Fracosaurus.” - and his adventures around a pristine environment with a smiling sun and happy animals and trees. In fact - the pictures depict that the only difference thing fracking does to the environment is produce a vibrant rainbow. Yes - fracking causes rainbows according to Talisman Energy - you didn’t know that? Overall - I guess the Friendly Fracosaurus is a better PR strategy than touting how your company contaminates water supplies all around the country. Unclear if other industries plan to jump on bard with similar campaigns - I can see the nuclear industry’s “Radioactive Raccoon” being a big hit - or BP's "Oily Otter."

I remember (a long time ago) while driving down the north Texas Gulf Coast we approached a nuclear reactor plant. Along side the road were signs reassuring drivers that "nuclear energy - it's only hot water" I wonder if those signs are still posted

And between segments you have a single commercial. One is from Exxon/Mobil. It has some geologist talking about looking at things a new way. How Natural gas can "safely" be extracted from the ground"right under our feet". There are pictures of lov-er-ly homes at dusk turning on their lights and Mayberry-esque main streets complete with red white and blue bunting. It ends with a sentence that drives me so nuts that I hit the mute button:

"It just take the idea and that's where the discovery comes from!"

Is that even English?


No mention of fracking... even though that's what the commercial is about.... nor being able to light your tap water on fire.

Kids will LOVE being able to ignite their tap water! Do they mention that in the coloring book?
